Actually, this is a decent thread. I was going to start it myself this morning, as it's an interesting situation where it's not 100% clear what happened.
If you haven't heard, Democratic NY Congressman Jamaal Bowman was in a rush to cast a Congressional vote, which was highly likely to go the Democrats' way.
Bowman was in the Canon House Office Building, and was looking to get to the Capitol Building in order to vote.
He encountered a closed set of double doors as he was attempting to exit the Canon Building, and strangely decided to pull the wall fire alarm:
Bowman is not old or senile. He's 47, and did not appear to be intoxicated in any way when this occurred.
There are various versions of the "truth" going around, depending upon which side you listen to.
Republicans say that Bowman pulled the fire alarm as a way to pause the voting, assuming that the confusion/investigation would allow him time to run over there and vote in time.
Democrats say that Bowman was simply confused by signs on the door in the Canon House Building, and thought he had to pull the alarm in order to go out that way. They also insist that Bowman was very aware the vote wasn't going to be close, so there was no reason for him to pull fire alarms simply to get his one vote into the totals.
To figure out what really happened, we need to start with some facts acknowledged by everyone:
- Jamaal Bowman really was in a hurry to get to the Capitol Building in order to cast a vote
- Jamaal Bowman really did intentionally pull the fire alarm on the side of the wall, believing that would let him out
- This vote was not expected to be close, so Democrats did not need Bowman's vote
So what really happened?
Bowman's explanation after the fact was, "I was trying to get to a door. I thought the alarm would open the door, and I pulled the fire alarm to open the door by accident. I was just trying to get to my vote and the door that’s usually open wasn’t open, it was closed."
Now why would Bowman feel that pulling a fire alarm would open a door? Democrats claimed that the signs on the door were confusing, actually instructing people to pull the alarm to open it:

However, there's two problems with that story. First, the signs seen on the door were NOT present in the security footage of Bowman (seen near the top of this post). He does seem to be holding something in his hand, perhaps both signs, but why would he remove both signs when doing it? Second, why would he have ignored "EMERGENCY EXIT ONLY" on the signs?
Some Republicans are claiming that the pictures of the door with the signs were taken AFTER the incident, when the signs were added.
Democrats also insist that pulling the alarm in the Canon Building would have no effect on the Capitol Building, so therefore he wasn't trying to pause the voting:

After thinking about it, I don't believe either side's interpretation/spin.
I don't believe the Republican allegation that Bowman thought pulling the alarm would cause the US Capitol building to also ring, and pause the voting.
I also don't believe the "innocent mistake" narrative pushed by Democrats, or that he was "confused".
Congresspeople are often judged by their voting record. If they miss votes, it looks bad -- appearing that laziness wins out over casting votes for their constituency. Bowman knew that the vote was meaningless as far as passing the bill (Democrats easily had enough support from both sides to pass it), but he knew that he really really wanted to get his vote in, in order to maintain a good voting record.
He was admittedly running late, and was frustrated when the expected (and most convenient) exit from the Canon Building was for emergency use only. This was not an emergency, but he figured he'd just pull the alarm, which he probably did believe from those signs would open the door, bolt out, and let Capitol Police handle the fallout from the false alarm. I believe he took the signs off in order to place them somewhere out of view, so it didn't look like he blatantly violated them.
I don't think he believed the alarm would cause an associated alarm in the Capitol to ring, nor did he think this alarm would pause the voting. He likely just felt he had two choices -- miss the vote, or cause an emergency fire alarm to ring in the Canon Building as he exited the only door close enough to get him there on time. He selfishly chose the latter.
I'm almost certain, from all available evidence, that the above is very close to the truth.
He should be answering why he felt he had a right to pull a fire alarm in order to get out of an otherwise out-of-service exit, simply because he could not manage his time properly. That's what people should be focusing upon -- not any conspiracy where he was trying to pause the vote.

I think it simply comes down to the fact he has some type of mental illness. It's kind of like that trans official in the Biden Administration who was ripping off luggage at airports. I grew up with a guy who at the age of 19 was arrested TWICE for knocking down mailboxes in the middle of the night. He was completely normal, had a job and went to college, etc.. When asked why he did it he could give no rational explanation.
I think he saw the alarm, probably always wanted to pull it and yesterday he said today is the day. I would not be surprised in the least if he is a serial shoplifter. Some people are just mentally off. In this case, the alarm was surrounded by signs, and for whatever reason the temptation just grew to be too much for him to handle. In his mind he had to do it.
