Biden and his appointees are so shitty at foreign policy, so opposing leaders just eat their lunch again and again. Same thing with Obama. Remember how Obama got totally clowned by Iran, as he got on his knees, paid an unenforceable $400 million "debt" from 1979 in order to get hostages back, and then Iranian leaders declared victory over him in the state media? Somehow Biden is even worse at foreign policy than that.
The fact that they couldn't get marine Paul Whelan back as part of the swap is laughable. Certain the Russkies can't claim that a notorious international arms dealer isn't worth a pot-smoking NBA player and a no-name marine who got in a fight with some Russian cops, right? But that's what they did claim, and Biden bought it. Terrible.
Russia basically stood firm. They said, "We have your lesbian basketball player, she will remain here until you send Bout, and we aren't in any hurry because Bout has been in prison for a long time anyway. No further negotiation. Fuck off."
In reality, Bout should have not been sent back for both Whelan or Griner, either. It sets a horrible precedent that, after the US arrests major Russian international criminals, Russia can just get them back by grabbing up an American celebrity.
