Was watching the grand opening of the Wynn Encore sports book in Boston on the news today.

Amongst the celebrities whoring it up for Wynn was Johnny Damon looking just like 2004 Johnny Damon of the 2004 World Series Red Sox - with his long hair and beard. The “idiots” they called themselves with their long hair and beards long before it wad the thing it is today.

Grienke “the athlete” got me thinking about Jacoby Ellsbury of the 2007 World Series champions Red Sox. Bill James said in that period Jacoby Ellsbury (who was a full blooded Navajo) was the top 3 fastest guys in the MLB at the time.

Boston had a pitcher named Clay Buchholz. I saw him pitch a no hitter when I took my son to his first Red Sox game in 2007. The story is told that Buchholz beat Ellsbury in a foot race during spring training. Buchholz was a sprinter in high school. Some players said Buchholz was the best athlete on the Red Sox.

What are some of your favorite World Series team reminisces, Druff?

So a funny story that may have slipped thru the cracks for some of you. Arbitration is really a weird, and unique to baseball with big sports, part of the salary structure for the young guys before getting to free agency. I'm not gonna do a whole history write-up of it, but the tl:dr version is basically guys have to go thru 3 (sometimes 4) years of possible arb in the final years of initial team control.

Now, smart teams today will try to avoid this process with their players, at least ones they really care about keeping around. Look at the Braves and Rays in recent years. Lock up young guys to early long-term extensions and avoid the whole process. Penny-pinching teams who don't give a fuck, will go to arb quite frequently. Which leads us to the Brewers and their ace starter Corbin Burnes.

Burnes's camp offered up a $10.75m offer. Not egregious (with the arb structure for escalating salaries) for arguably the most consistently best pitcher in baseball the last 3 years. Brewers countered with $10.01. Somehow, they could not settle. In arb hearing, Brewers reps basically throw their star pitcher under the bus. Unbelievable.

    And down goes Lux.

Dodgers SS defense probably improved today.

Got the alert and my first instinct was to fade the Dodgers wins total.

I just needed a moment of clarity to realize, like you, that this actually corrects a stubborn Dodger mistake

Lux woulda been some good lulz

The problem is that the team is not deep offensively, and Lux brings a fairly good bat. In fact, he had the potential to really break out offensively this year.

The 5-6-7-8-9 spots in the lineup are now projected to be:

    JD Martinez
    David Peralta
    Trayce Thompson
    Miguel Vargas
    Miguel Rojas

Ouch. Chris Taylor will take one of these spots in a number of games, but still... ouch.

Off topic, I'm wondering if the Padres will get Steroids Matt Carpenter or Terrlble Matt Carpenter.

Regarding the arbitration process, it's really weird, and it caused the Dodgers to (semi-voluntarily) lose Bellinger this year.

I understand why the arb process exists -- basically to make sure that players under team control are compensated at least somewhat fairly after the first few years -- but the process is definitely broken when a guy like Bellinger is projected to get $18m in his final team-controlled year. Indeed, out on the open market, Bellinger got 1-year, $17.5m.

There should not be a case where a player gets better money in arb than he would on the open market. There needs to be a better process for arbitration bringing lesser compensation to declined players under team control, or otherwise it virtually forces these teams to release these players early.

Would have been nice to see if the Dodgers could get Bellinger right with one more year, but I understand why it wasn't worth $18m to try.

Corey Seager —> Trea Turner —> Miguel Rojas

Druff, it is now time to have that talk about the Dodgers trading SS Oneil Cruz to the Pirates.

A stretch of I-5 in LA is now named after Tommy Lasorda.

Wouldn't it be nicer to have these honors while one is still alive? Always found it kinda sad that the nicest things said about people, and a lot of the honors bestowed upon them, occur when they're gone and will never see it.

Yeah, usually not having a centerfielder on the roster kinda hurts.

Watch your Ohtani AL MVP bets. Obv Ohtani IS the most valuable player in baseball - let alone AL MVP. I binked him 2 years ago.

If the Angels suck in the first half of the year (they will) Ohtani could get deal to National League and your bet will be toast

Let’s get this out of the way

Since Ohtani could be out of AL MVP

    Julio Rodriguez
    American League MVP
    +900 FD

    +700 DK

    Corbin Burnes
    National League Cy Young
    +550

    Pete Alonso
    HR Leader
    +1100

    Corbin Carroll
National League Rookie of the Year
    +400

    Mets
    Over 91.5 Wins
    -115

Diaz injury offers a bargain. Owner is “all in”. Closers are replaceable if you are committed.

    Jacob DeGrom
    Under 198.5 Strikeouts
    -120

Gotta be on active list to throw strikeouts

    Padres
    Over 93.5 wins
    -105

    Padres
    Best Regular Season Record
    +850 FD

    Padres
    National League Winner
    +775

    (Boosted +300 DK - was +475)

    Edit
Almost forgot to post but I think it’s understood this year
    Dodgers
    Under 95.5 Wins
    -115

    Blast this

Any questions - I’ll be pleased to explain.

Gonna pepper a few more like Sawks Masataka Yoshida AL ROY and worst records etc. Need time to work

I do believe I have been missing Massachusetts boosts and free bets for baseball similar to the +300 league & World Series boost I call out above.

I have multiple accounts and focus on hockey and attempt something of a life so I prolly missed some stuff. The boosts and free bets are a whole lifestyle if you let it be one.

I’m still getting up to speed on legal pros and cons.

I’m calling the Massachusetts Better Business Bureau Monday about the criminal “cash out” offers. They really do prey on their noob customers. I’m petrified I’m gonna swipe thru my bets and activate one of those shit offers

Parlaying live favorite stuff has been really good to me. Two wrongs - favorites and parlays - making a perverted even money “right” far too often. Offshores would never ever offer that

Max “Quick Pitch” Scherzer vs Sandy Alcantara is going to be epic.

Max doesn’t wait for his catcher to put down a sign. He is going to obliterate the new rules

Giants get absolutely stomped on in New York, against the Yankees.

Aaron Judge picks up right where he left off and hits a HR, while San Franciscans think what could've been.

In other MLB news, Max Fried hurt his hamstring on his first start, which isn't good for my fantasy team.

The Rangers absolutely bombed Aaron Nola and some relievers in the 4th, hanging a 9 on them.

Finally, Daniel Bard is on the DL (I refuse to call it the "IL") due to anxiety. I used to laugh at this, but after experiencing severe anxiety myself in 2018, it's indeed serious business. He struggled at the WBC, and that's probably why. Honestly it's hard to function and do anything when experiencing severe anxiety. Good luck to him. Rockies need a new closer in the meantime.

Dodgers don't play until tonight, in what is a rare night opener.
