Advice for a first time truck buyer

    Never owned a truck.

    I could use a truck.

    I'm going Ford F150 obv.

    what say you?

I already know, but advice on new vs. used would be appreciated.

If it has rust on it I don't want it. We use a sick amount of salt on the roads here and most every Ford/Chevy/Dodge out there gets rusted after a 6-7 years. A Toyota Tacoma with a 5 or 6 speed stick and 4 doors is a nice choice. Anyone drive a stick anymore? If you have to have a Ford I would downgrade on the year and buy it in the South (if getting there to pick it up is worthwhile) where you might get one that's never seen salt. Good luck. Hope you post some pics when you get it.

make sure your garage is long enough to fit the truck inside

get a bed liner and a rear bumper if not standard

4 wheel drive if it snows where you live or if you have dirt/mud roads
(long before there was a PFA i had my Grenade & Crossbones avatar at DD)

I kept a stick shift up until 2020, would have gotten another but just impossible to find on stock hondas these days. Still the best theft prevention device on the market if you can get one, and much more enjoyable of an experience imo

country978: The stick is far better of a drive. Miss the days when they were the rule not the exception

To clarify. I'm no mechanic (damn my life). Am I a bigger sucker for buying/leasing new vs.
    used? That is the question.

By used, I mean everything. I am a stick shift monster.
    Best way to drive...
Check out a standard Audi A4
cream coloured before anyone knew about Audis.
Yes I drove it to the ground.

    anyway I love everyone.
no, no, forgot about Dwai and Jesus for a moment.

I have had small pickups for many years. Can't imagine not having a truck. Never know when you might need to move a refridgerator, get some firewood or see something cool abandoned at the side of the road.

I have always bought new because I can't fix it if it breaks and I can't tell if someone has put sawdust in the transmission before they sell it to me.
My last two trucks have been Nissan Frontier's. I always get 4WD. The last one had the full offroad package, skid plates, lo crawl gear, etc.

Here's what I can tell you about buying new from a dealer: There will ALWAYS be attempts to upsell you, and it will get confusing. Go online and research the truck you want and what options you want. Here are a couple of things to watch for:
they will quote you a loan rate and then at the very end say, "well we couldn't get you that rate but we got you this rate" which will cost you 2k more over the life of the loan. without even asking you they will check off some expensive warranty add-on on the contract.
You don't need "security etchings" on the windows. You probably don't need undercoating. Bedliner is a different story but you can get that on your own.
The sales staff work on commission and the dealership has to make a profit, so they have to try to sell stuff.
I suggest you be prepared to walk out if it seems like they are trying to overrun you.
But in the end, once you get your truck and you like it, forget about whether you paid a little too much and just enjoy it!

Absolute worst time in history to buy a vehicle without knowing someone at a dealership.

With the way used vehicles currently are priced you may as well buy new.

That is solid. I am a salesmen and yet I somehow ignore the template when it comes to buying new.
    Stupid.
Not knowing the product is my problem. Used can range from the best to the worst deal.

I own an 18’ ram. Crew cab big horn hemi

I’d say skip the small to mid size trucks and go full size.

Any rust, I mean any rust or bubbling pass.

Figure out if gas is going to be an issue. F150 v6 twin turbo will average 21st city my ram v8 averages 16. To fill up a truck it’s about 75-100$ if you have the 36 gallon tank well you can do the math.

Skip the midsize trucks and go full size. The mid size trucks don’t get good gas mileage generally tow and haul less for the same money also the mid size trucks have extremely small backseats, want to drive around with a few friends? You can’t comfortably in a ranger.

Do you live in snow or mountain terrain get 4x4.

I’d say try all 3 and see which one is the most comfortable interior. They are totally different

All trucks have flaws, you’re going to have common repairs with all 3 brands.

Walk to the liquor store. The charges are a lot less for walking drunk than driving drunk.

Alright. I'm not overly comforted with the truck advice, thank-you though

    How about leasing?

Or, how bout buying two dogs instead?
