You read that right.
In 1992, a couple froze embryos of twins, and then 15 years passed and they apparently decided not to have more children. Instead of destroying the lives they created, they donated the embryos to possible parents who wanted to "adopt" them through IVF, but these embryos sat for another almost 15 years, before being implanted in early 2022.
The babies were born on 10/31/22.
This set a record for the oldest embryos becoming a live baby. The previous record, set in 2020, was 27 years.
Interestingly, the National Embryos Donation Center is a private organization which is run by Christians, who feel that destruction of embryos is similar to abortion. Therefore, they also place rules on the adoption of such embryos. The adopting couple has to be married at least 3 years, and must consist of a genetic male and genetic female. There were actually 5 embryos, but two had either degraded or were poor quality in the first place, and the third failed to implant properly. The other two became live babies, which were born healthy.
Since frozen embryos have a very long life, it is possible we could see in the future embryos that were frozen hundreds of years in the past.
