Christopher Cross was one of those early 80s artists hurt by MTV, because he wasn't good looking, and this became obvious to everyone when they saw his videos.
Donnie Iris had the same fate, as he was short, skinny, nerdy, and had bad teeth. Not exactly a rockstar look.
Ric Ocasek, also one of the ugly guys of '80s rock, somehow escaped the hammer of MTV, and in fact grew in popularity during those years.

I wouldn't have known his name was Christopher Cross prior to this thread. If not for this thread, assuming it never came on anywhere, I probably would have never thought about this song again.
I mean, if it's taco night and you're in Aisle 3 trying to decide between Zatarain's and Rice-a-Roni Spanish Rice, and 'Sailing,' happens to be the song playing...it could be worse than that. It's an extremely mediocre late-70's song.

I’ve seen Donnie Iris probably 50 times. Not even because I was some big fan, but he’s from here, he always lived here, and his career was so strange that I saw him play maybe a few thousand seat places, but after that faded, like I’d go out with my buddies to a bar and he’d be there playing. Like I didn’t even know he was playing, I was just going to the bar.
He’s an old dude now. He’s older than my dad by 5 years. Like 80.
The weird part is I’ve known guys who played in just popular local bands who made a living at it, and he was much bigger than that regionally for a good 20 years from early 80s to 2000ish? Even five years ago he was playing a few shows at a decent sized place in Pittsburgh for his 75th birthday.
I wouldn’t have thought him rich, but I would have thought him pretty comfortable from all the shows. But the dude was selling real estate right across the border from me in his 70s. And I don’t mean high end real estate. I’m talking like a 3 bedroom 100 year old row house built for steelworkers 100 years earlier for like $50k. You’d see his face on some real estate sign outside a shitbox.
When I first started going to concerts at like 13-15, I saw some of the strangest shows ever. I recall seeing Bon Jovi open up for Donnie Iris. Like at that point, Donnie Iris was a bigger star than Bon Jovi, or at least was when they booked it. A year later, Bon Jovi was the biggest band in the world. I actually saw Bon Jovi twice when I was like 13 or 14 in my little town. . Both times they were opening up for local bands from here. I saw a show where it was Bon Jovi, Night Ranger, and a local band called the Bangorillaz that were fucking horrible. It was just funny because both bands were absolutely huge almost immediately after those shows.
I recall every girl having Bon Jovi pictures on their lockers a year later and playing sold out arenas, and I’d tell them, “he was just here in town last year right down the street.” They almost didn’t believe it.
One of the times I ran into Donnie at a bar show, I told him I saw you like 20 years ago opening up for Bon Jovi and he laughed and said even his younger relatives didn’t believe him when he’d tell them that. I guess they played quite a few shows together and a guy in the Cruisers wrote a song on Bon Jovi’s first album. It was just the most different show ever. Like a young Bon Jovi with the big hair and girls screaming and then ugly Donnie came out.
I googled it to try and see if I could find a date, and someone wrote about it on a blog.
