Sarah Palin about to be politically DD?

She's trying to run for Alaska's at-large Congressional seat. They have a weird "ranked choice voting" system there, where it's not binary as to the voter's choices.

It's either going to be Palin or Democrat Mary Pelota.

Seems to be a tossup. Results should be announced in like 10 minutes.

I laid some money on Pelota on Predictit, because I think it's about 50/50, and Pelota is the dog on Predictit (I got close to +250).

Still a little time to bet there if you want it.

    Pelota wins.

Not a Palin fan, so I'm not even that sad politically, though sucks to lose a House seat for my side.

The money I just made is nice, though. Thanks to the PFA listener in Alaska who alerted me to this.

To show you how unpopular Palin is, she was behind by 9 points, but had to just score about 2/3 of the second-place votes of conservative Nick Begich, who got 28% in the election. She failed to do so. So enough Begich voters either put Pelota down as their second choice, or left the second choice blank, and Palin lost.

This shows what happens when a shit candidate is nominated. Expect more of this for the GOP, sadly. Candidate quality is still huge, it's not just about partisan voting.

Not over yet totally Druff. Remember this will be rehashed in Nov it was a special
Election for the empty seat. It’s just a place holder for a few months. The full 2 yr term still has to be voted
On in Nov and I believe Palin is still in on that and could be just poor turnout that won’t be the same in November.

Side note this is why the Dems love this ranked choice voting bullshit it oddly seems to favor them. This isn’t a damn HOF vote this is for Congress you chose who you want end of story none of this hey this one but if not this one is my second choice. Political elections should be absolute voting always.

Yes, but this isn't a good sign for November. I realize that maybe turnout differences could swing it back to R.

Would be nice if Nick Begich III (the grandson of the guy who held this seat in 1972, but vanished in an apparent plane crash while campaigning) could win, and get the seat back for the GOP, while keeping Palin out.

Republicans got caught with their pants down. Not enough of them fell out to vote. Peltola won because it was a low turnout, about 170,000 votes. This will surely fire up the republican base. The November election will see 300,000+ voters.

As a former Alaskan with Alaskan relatives I can tell you the biggest knock Alaskans have against Palin is she didn't finish her term as Governor. A lot of people held it against her. But she had to do something to pay lawyers to defend her against the multitude of frivolous lawsuits filed by dems during and after the 2008 presidential election. She couldn't do it on a Governor's salary and the media was offering her a lot of money.

Note this entire “ranking” BS was done by Murkowski and her allies to avoid her being eliminated in the primary.

But the point others made about bad candidates was proven in Alaska in 2010 when the GOP and Tea party put up a shit candidate in Joe Miller. So Lisa when a write in campaign and won over Miller and a token Democratic candidate I can’t remember.

Nevada residents know this all too well when the GOP put up a lunatic also in 2010 when they had to perfect opportunity to retire Harry Reid. Sharon Angle was afraid to meet the press and tried the Biden 2020 strategy 10 years earlier.

Missouri did the same thing in 2010 with a crazy far right candidate whose name I can’t remember. I wonder how many states will be saying the same this November?

Yes, this election will have a lot of similarities to 2010 -- a Republican victory, but lost opportunities due to shit candidates being nominated. In 2010 it was the Tea Party, in 2022 it's the MAGA crowd. Dumb.

At least I got to perhaps get one final win over the idiot bettors on Predictit before the thing shuts down. I can't take credit for this one, though, as it was a suggestion from a PFA listener, and I looked into it and liked what he was recommending.

Remember when Sarah Palin was considered retarded in 2008?

Good to see it was just a blip and conservative intellectualism returned.

No, I mean all the frivolous lawsuits filed by dem fucking retards that think up myriad stupid fucking reasons to sue that they have no chance of winning but do it to harass the opposition. She had a couple dozen lawsuits filed against her by democrat operatives when she was Governor, a job that payed 125K a year and her old man didn't make much money either.

She needed money to hire lawyers. Fox News offered her 1 million dollars a year as a part time commentator which she did for 5 years which is what she resigned as Governor to do. And then she had a couple shows on cable.

All the suits against her failed but it cost her half a million in legal fees.

Druff calls her a shit candidate but she was the best governor Alaska ever had. She threw out the pipeline corruption and made huge budget cuts among other things. And she wasn't an elitist. She turned down a 25K a year payraise in 2007. She sold off the Governor's jet and wouldn't use the Governor's chef.

Murkowski is a corrupt piece of shit. The Begich family is just as corrupt as the Murkowski's.

Can we just agree Palin's 15mins were up awhile ago. Clearly she hasnt figured it out yet sadly. However I do think the whole ranked choice voting thing is a steaming pile of crap which is ripe for either intentional or unintentional manipulation.

Had Palin pulled this off, Democrats would be bitching LOUDLY about ranked choice voting, noting that Palin lost by 9 points yet "won" the election anyway. And they'd have been right.

However, because Palin is disliked by so many in Alaska, many voting for Nick Begich (conservative, close 3rd place finisher) either second-voted for Pelota, or left the second vote blank. This allowed Pelota to only lose 6 points of the 9, and still comfortably win.

But we can't be results-oriented. Ranked choice voting very much benefits whichever party has more likely voters.

Let's take a generic situation to illustrate this.

Candidate A is a Republican, and is running in a conservative district.

Candidate B is a Democrat, but is moderate and has a lot of charisma, so he actually has a shot at winning.

Candidate C is of a third party. He has attracted a lot of people who are basically conservative, but find him more interesting and nonconformist.

The election is held. Candidate B pulls off an upset, and the results are as follows:

    B: 44%
    A: 41%
    C: 15%

Under a normal system, Candidate B would (rightfully) win. However, in many cases, C's 15% of the votes would then be distributed to A and B based upon "second choice" rankings, and with more of C's followers being conservative, there would be a good chance that A would be the winner of the election.

It would be very hard for candidate B to win in such a district.

In any case, I do hope this puts an end to Palin. The only good thing she did was ruin that phony Steve Schmidt's career (before he rebounded years later with that scam Lincoln Project).

She was elected Governor for four years in 2006. She always had high job approval ratings. Her legal troubles started when McCain picked her as his running mate in 2008. Democrat operatives poured into the state doing "opposition research" looking for anything and everything they could to muddy her up in the national press.

Alaskans were shocked at the amount of strangers in the state asking questions about her and looking for documents under the Freedom of Information Act. The State of Alaska spent over 2 million dollars honoring those requests. Had she not resigned the state would have had to spend millions more.

The dem operatives were sure they could find something on her, anything. Was she fucking the postman, anything? But she came up clean. In the end all they could do was file the frivolous lawsuits that came in the form of "ethics complaints." It cost her a lot of money in lawyer's fee's to defend her reputation.

She's the prime example of what can happen to a person when they suddenly get thrown into national politics. No one in the lower 48 knew who she was until August 2008 when out of the blue she got picked for McCain's running mate. Dem operatives came pouring into Alaska like a pack of wild dogs. They did everything they could to ruin her. If people like Druff don't like her then in the end you have to say they did a pretty good job.

Even some of Palin's critics question the validity of some of the complaints, and her supporters have waged a weeklong Webathon to raise money for a legal defense fund set up for the governor, ringing up more than $109,000 by day seven, Sunday.

But the number of filings may also reflect a broader awareness of ethics law in Alaska, where any citizen can send in any number of complaints. Some say they're taking Palin up on her own challenge to Alaska voters.

"She said she was going to be open, transparent and wanted people to hold her accountable," said Kim Chatman, an Eagle River resident whose complaint against Palin is among the few still pending. "I took her for her word."

All the complaints have been brought by Alaskans, except for one filed by Washington-based Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics alleging the $150,000-plus designer wardrobe the Republican Party bought to outfit Palin in her national quest violated the Federal Election Campaign Act. That complaint was dismissed.

One complaint, in which the Alaska Personnel Board found no wrongdoing, concluded with the governor agreeing to pay the state $10,000 for trips taken by her children — money that is due Tuesday.

I always wonder how long it takes politicians to switch from their actual beliefs to just preaching to the choir to get elected and then re elected.
