I was almost a performer on the Sirius XM '80s Cruise in 2016

I don't think I ever told this story. Maybe I did, because I can forget what I've posted here over the 10+ years this site has been up, and I sometimes forget what I've previously said on radio.

But in case I haven't, here's what occurred...

Some of you might remember Dave Lerman from his appearances on radio. Dave was a character actor and comedian. He's about 5 years older than me. In the 1990s, he went around with fellow comedian Doug Bady, who was less than 3 feet tall and had muscular dystrophy. They toured with Sam Kinison in the 1980s until Kinison's untimely death, and then made the rounds on Howard Stern and other quirky '90s shows. The gimmick was that the pathetic-looking Bady was incredibly rude and foul-mouthed, which shocked people.

Unfortunately, Bady passed away at the age of 31 in 1996, and Lerman was left without his unique comedy partner. At that point, he started taking odd jobs in Hollywood as a character actor, mostly on "reality" type daytime shows and news reports which needed people to either tell bullshit stories or act as stand-ins for real people who didn't want to appear on TV.

In later years, Dave found it harder to find work, and also suffered from various health issues.

At some point in the early '90s, Dave befriended rapper Biz Markie, who was best known for his weird 1989 hit "Just a Friend". They maintained occasional contact over the years, and in 2015 Dave told Biz that he was having a hard time getting work, and asked for any possible leads to jobs. Markie told Dave that he had just signed to perform on the inaugural Sirius XM '80s Cruise, which was to take place in February 2016. While the announcement linked here doesn't mention Markie, you can google it and indeed see that Markie was on that cruise and performed. (Markie passed away last year, by the way.)

Anyway, Markie decided to help a buddy out, and talked the '80s Cruise people into hiring Dave. He pointed out that Dave had appeared on various trivia/pop culture game shows, had a lot of Hollywood knowledge/connections from the '80s era, and would be a great host for '80s trivia and karaoke. The '80s Cruise people contacted Dave, and told him that the job was his.

So how did I come into this?

Dave was told that he could bring a "plus 1" on the cruise with him. This is an expensive cruise because of the '80s/Sirius XM theme, and Dave was basically getting a free stateroom for two people, as well as compensation for the work he'd do onboard. It wasn't going to be big money, but at least he'd get a free cruise out of it, and could bring a friend or a date. Well, since he wasn't dating anyone at the time, he invited me to go, figuring I could also help him with the '80s trivia and karaoke stuff. He asked me if he could pitch the idea to the '80s Cruise people to hire me, as well, and not simply have me as the +1. I told him I'd like that, and he inquired about it. They came back and told him it was fine -- especially since this incurred very little expense for them (he could already bring a second person anyway), and this way they'd have another person doing it, also providing backup in case Dave got sick or whatever. So he and I unofficially had the job.

We are also slated to appear on the Sirius XM '80s on 8 Channel, for some kind of segment related to the onboard trivia game. This was never fully explained to me, but given my love of radio, I was very happy to do it.

So why didn't you ever hear about my doing this? It fell through, and I'll explain why in the next post...

Recall from the last post that Dave wasn't getting a lot of work in the mid-2010s, and he wasn't going to be paid very much for the cruise job. Sure, he'd get a cruise ticket worth thousands (and for two people!), but when the whole thing was over, he'd be about breaking even after paying for the flight to and from the cruise port. That wasn't going to do him much good.

He also wasn't thrilled with the stateroom. We were assigned one of the lower-tier inside cabins, with no window. All of a sudden, this "opportunity" didn't look very exciting to Dave, and he decided to press for more. However, he had already invited me, and didn't want me to know that he was going to re-negotiate, fearing I would object regarding the potential alienation of the '80s Cruise people. Remember, we only had an agreement in theory, and nothing was signed.

Dave first asked for an increase in pay. They agreed to a moderate increase.

Then he asked for a balcony stateroom. They weren't thrilled about this, as balconies went for considerably more money (and the cruise was likely to sell out), but they reluctantly gave him the balcony room.

Next, he asked for them to cover the cost of our plane tickets to fly to the cruise departure location. They agreed.

After these three successes, Dave decided to go for the gold. He wanted a suite. He figured that he'd wait a little bit until it was possibly too late to hire a suitable replacement, and then drop it on them that he's demanding a suite. About 4 months before the cruise, he asked how tall I was, remembering that I was a lot taller than him. I told him, "Around 6'2", and he asked if I could pass for 6'5". I told him there was no chance I could pass for 6'5", but 6'3" would be believable, and possibly 6'4". I asked him why my height mattered.

He said he was going to tell the '80s Cruise that I was 6'5" and wouldn't fit well in a small stateroom, so we needed a suite!

I thought this was an absurd reason. It's not like the beds in suites are longer. I told him I didn't think this was a good idea, but he said he would be able to manipulate it to where they gave us a suite for this reason. He advised me to "stand up as tall as I can" when I was around them, so as to not make him look like a liar! I was starting to regret agreeing to going on this cruise. However, I figured that he was the one making the claim about my height, and not me. If questioned I would just say that Dave misremembered my exact height. I told him that I was not going to directly lie to anyone at the '80s Cruise -- not on the phone, and not once onboard.

He then called up the '80s Cruise people and made his suite demand.

Not only did they deny his request, but they told him to forget the entire thing. He had become too much of a pain in the ass, and they were tired of it. It's not like he was some famous '80s singer that everyone wanted to see. He was just a guy they were about to hire at the recommendation of Biz Markie.

Dave was then highly ashamed about his overreach, and didn't know how to tell me. The cruise drew closer and closer, and he wasn't providing me with any cruise ticket, confirmation number, or contact person to verify I was going. However, he kept insisting it was "still on", while he tried in the background to beg for our jobs back.

Well, finally with 2 weeks until cruise time, and still no confirmation, I realized Dave was full of shit, and told him I knew there was no '80s Cruise for us. He finally admitted "there was a problem" but that he was still working on it. Finally, after the cruise actually left port without us, he admitted that the whole 6'5" suite routine was what fucked the whole thing, and he had been ashamed to tell me what happened, because I had objected to that plan all along.

I'm not even sure who they ultimately hired to do the trivia and karaoke in 2016, or if they just assigned the job to an existing employee.

So it goes. I wasn't even mad at him. It was Dave Lerman being Dave Lerman. Would've been fun, though.

    That's an odd story.

Howard Stern sucked up all the funds, I always thought his xm deal was insane on their part.

Technically Sirius as they hired him and they were the lead company during the merger.

XM had the better act in “Opie & Anthony” but they fucked that up for themselves.

Great story by the way Dan. Is this the Dave that DJ’s at Kiss Golf?

    Agree.

I think they overestimated how many people would need him to be part of the package in order to subscribe. In reality, I'm sure he didn't bring anywhere near the business to SiriusXM
(directly or indirectly) compared to what they paid him.

Howard also wasn't as good on Sirius, because he was free from the hated FCC restrictions, which ironically had made his show better because they forced him to be more creative, and not resort to blatant vulgarity. When Stern was allowed to be as profane as he wanted, the show actually got worse, as he was able to rely too heavily upon that for shock value.

Also, Stern aged out of his own edginess. He's 68 now. He's simply not the same energetic, blunt, witty guy he once was. Now he's too political, and comes off more like a bitter old man than a shock jock.

    A performer? Define performer?

Considering an audience is derived from passenger demographics the list of performers would be limited. I.E. no quantum physics.

This leaves me to wonder what performance you might be capable of?

And this is all I could imagine
