Anyone here ever try to go Plant Based?

So, I've been dealing with a bad shoulder (torn labrum, Bursitis, and Very Inflamed A/C joint), and trying to avoid surgery. I've been reading a lot about food and it's relation to inflammation. Apparently, an animal based protein can cause more inflammation than a plant protein. As an athlete in my mid fifties, I have always eaten a lot of animal protein. I eat beef, chicken, fish, pork, lamb and shellfish of every kind. I usually start of my day with eggs, have some chicken for lunch and fish for dinner. On the weekends, I usually eat beef, lamb or pork for dinner. I usually only ate salad on top of my burgers.

So my daughter went Vegan a few years ago because of Ulcerative Colitis, and it has helped. I tried it for a few days a year and 1/2 ago and was fucking miserable and went back to animal protein after day 4. I was weak, had no energy and my wife and employees wanted to kill me from the mood I was in. I didn't really have a reason to do it, had no game plan and therefore giving up was easy.

This time I actually have game plan. I am about a week in to it. I gave up Beef and Chicken, and am only eating small amounts of Fish with lower Mercury levels or a few Shrimp once, every other day. For breakfast, instead of eggs, I am eating various berries and oatmeal. For lunch I am eating salads and pasta. For dinner, more greens and various veggies of all colors. Tossing Flax Chia and various nuts as topping on food, so I think I'm getting everything except for Omega 3 which I can still get from the fish. I have had several training runs without any drop off in energy. I really don't feel sore anymore the next day after training and my overall recovery time is less. I have already lost a few pounds and feel pretty good. Most importantly, I can still drink beer and bourbon. Gonna try this for a month and then get some bloodwork to make sure I'm not missing any vital nutrients.

I'm not doing this for any Moral or Ethical reason. I love to eat animals. But, I gotta get rid of this freaking shoulder pain. Has anyone on here tried to go plant based? If so, what was your experience?

Eating for your blood type is more important imo.

It’s an interesting rabbit hole. I have personal experience. I know people who adopted this discipline 30 years ago and I’m impressed with their health

Saw this the other day. Sale price for something pretty mundane. Shaws Supermarket which is lower tier grocery store. Had to show my wife. We are rarely beef eaters.

5 more years we will see huge dietary changes have occurred

Your diet isn't going to fix your torn labrum.

    Try PRP injections.

Yes, PRP is next after Round 1 of PT. Dietary changes are to deal with the inflammation.

Yes, not quite vegan but close.

Lost a ton of weight and haven't looked back. Felt much healthier, been 10 years. Wasn't hard

Also not a PETA faggot or some religious cuckold, just lost my taste for it.

I was a vegetarian for 17 years. these days I am mostly veggie. I missed Gyros of all things. So sometimes I break my own rules but i made the damn rules in the first place.
I lost a bit of unhealthy weight at the time and it was difficult to figure out how to eat coming from a family who had meat in EVERY single meal. I had to figure out for myself that fake meat products are mostly garbage. I think its been a good choice in my life overall.

I’m 46, have about 12% body fat (visible abs) and impeccable blood work.

I eat a very heavy meat (mainly red) diet. I also eat 5 eggs (minimum) every day.

Yea, I won't be eating fake meat. A lot of it is actually worse for your health than beef, due to the high amounts of sodium. If I have the urge to eat red meat, I'll eat red meat. But, for now I'm really not missing it, although it's only been a week or so since i started this deal. The challenge will be to see if I can keep this up long term. And i figure if I am good most of the time, it'll be good enough.

2 weeks in. So far, so good. I don't feel sore after running or the next day. Sometimes, I feel really hungry in-between meals, but have health snacks to handle it. (I also felt hungry in-between meals when I was eating meat.) I can still drink beer, and I don't feel weak. This past weekend i was in Greensboro, NC and was able to do multiple whiskey tastings and beer guzzling with no ill effects. So far, so good.

I'm pretty sure I have read positive claims with regards to inflammation but it was attributed to the carnivore diet.

You only live once, are you going out by bothering waiters and anyone that will listen about your special needs.

What a treat. Table for one.

A month into this and I am down about 11 lbs., which is nice but not the goal. I noticed that my recovery post runs is much shorter and easier. I actually have MORE energy. I run faster with less effort.

Grocery shopping is a lot less expensive these days. Yes, I'm buying more fruit and veggies, but eliminating Meat, chicken and Fish from the bill is eye opening.

I no longer eat fast food, or processed food. So, I'm sure my cholesterol and sugar levels are lower. Going for a Physical Exam with a Primary care Dr. for the first time in years. Want to see how this eating style is affecting my health.

Going out to eat in restaurants is NOT difficult. Ate at Carbone in Miami Beach last weekend (party of 8). No issues. Ordered the Chop salad, ate some bread. Ate the Spicy Rigatoni (yes, I know the Vodka sauce ahs cream in it, but just a little won't kill me) Also ate Broccoli Rabe, Mushrooms and Potatoes Louie. Everyone else is my age (mid fifties) and some were already limiting their animal protein anyways. The rest ordered some Veal and Chicken dishes and didn't care that I wasn't eating what they were.

Although it's only been 4 weeks, I really think I can do this long term. As long as I follow this way of eating MOST of the time, a few animal protein variations here and there won't kill me. This upcoming half-marathon racing season will be the true test. Going to Baha Mar this holiday weekend. After all, what better way to celebrate our country's independence Day, than in a foreign country. Made dinner reservations months ago-pre plant based eating. 1st night is the steakhouse Carna. Might actually try a small bit of my wife's filet. Otherwise, going to stick with the plant based eating and keep this thing rolling.

If god didn’t want us to eat animals he wouldn’t have made them out of meat.

I’m surprised it’s agreeing with you so much. Feel like I’ve known a 100 people enthusiastic about it at one point, and I see them a year later, and they couldn’t do it. Felt too washed.

I’m curious about the blood work. Is losing 11pbs good for a guy who is a distance runner? I’d have guessed you were already light. Did you gain a little with the shoulder?

My only abnormality on blood panels is low ferritin levels (iron).

Was told I could take supplements if I feel low energy. I started on them just to see if it would make a difference.

Slightly higher levels but no change in energy. It's a life hack to improve diet for any active person that wants to recover faster and have higher energy.

Fat and lazy people will just suffer and are probably better off making little tweaks, as fatties with no discipline will just yo-yo and get fatter than before.

Not all distance runners are thin and look like Kenyans. Some are portly and pear shaped. I was fit, but a bit heavier than I wanted to be. I was just under 6 feet and 196 when I started this thing. My resting avg. heart rate was 44. Now it's 42 for the past week. But, you're right. The blood work would be most telling. Problem is that I don't have a baseline, as I haven't had blood work done in years. I remember my cholesterol was a bit high back then. I'm sure it was bad when I started this. I was eating lots of red meat and bacon. Lots of cheese and eggs. Tons of baked ziti. Lots of Empandas. So, I'm guessing my cholesterol has to be way better than a month ago.
