    WSOP 2022 Lammers

Last year the WSOP started to require people to prove they won the lammers somehow before using them to get into an event. I can't remember the details but I think they eventually stop caring. Does anyone what their policy will be this year? I ask because I enjoy playing the sit-n-gos but there is no point if I can't sell the lammer for face value as people will usually buy them to not sit in line.

    Thank You!

That's a great question. I'll ask it on Twitter and see what they say back.

    To elaborate slightly:

Considering the amount of heat I got for commenting about this issue last year, it's best for me to refrain from making any comments unless there's some sort of definitive statement.

Tournament buy-in chips are being awarded for winners of satellites this year, like in the past.

No problem, Kevmath. I never gave you heat, btw. I know you always give the info available to you, and it's almost always accurate. There is nobody in poker who is better at this stuff.

Anyway, for those wondering, the concern about the 2022 lammers is because of what happened last year.

Lammers have always been "unofficially transferrable", meaning that people could (and did) sell them to each other, thus allowing winners of satellites to immediately cash out at full value, rather than being stuck with tournament buyin chips they don't want to use to play further.

Typically those wanting to sell lammers would simply approach a WSOP registration line, and sell them. This wasn't technically legal, due to federal currency laws. That is, only American dollars can be used for payment, so casino chips are not a currency. Thus, casino chips are supposed to only be cashed/used by the original recipient, and not used by third parties. This is why casinos will confiscate your casino chips if you admit that you got them from someone else (well, it's also a money grab, but that's the reason they cite).

Anyway, up until 2021, Caesars looked the other way with the lammers situation when these unofficial sales went on. However, perhaps due to an increase of incidents where people were selling stolen lammers, Caesars decided to abruptly clamp down near the end of the 2021 WSOP, requiring that their computer system shows proof of you winning the lammers before you can use them to register. This was an awful thing to do near the end of the series, thus rendering lammers mostly useless for those holding them, who won them with the expectation they could sell them.

Supposedly the WSOP reversed the policy after a lot of outrage and again looked the other way for the remainder of the series, but I never verified this.

In any case, they need to finally CLARIFY the situation prior to this WSOP. They also need to make sure everyone registering is aware that these can no longer be sold, given that lammer-selling was a normal thing for the prior 16 years.
