I think I saw Colombo available on Amazon Prime. It would be interesting to sample what constituted a writers notion of crime back then.

You and your friends didn’t shoot up your junior high school. By that measure it prolly isn’t edgy enough for the modern audience.

Best 1970s crime dramas were Hawaii Five-O and The Rockford Files.

Rockford files was pretty good. Hawaii 5-0 was pretty unwatchable.

    Neither comes close to Columbo.

I liked Rockford so much that I actually visited Paradise Cove (where Rockford's character lived) when I passed by, and took some pictures.

Unfortunately, his trailer is now a bathroom.

Funny, years ago I ate at the restaurant in Malibu that is shown in the Intro of the Rockford Files.

I agree with you, Columbo is the best. My 96 year old grandmother loves it as well. My favorite guest star was always Robert Culp.

    I’m with you on that.

I usually agree with Druff on TV shit from the seventies. I’ve never got the 5-0 love. I thought it was unwatchable.

Hawaii Five-O was a forerunner to Miami Vice, in some ways.

Both were "atmosphere" shows, where the setting was as important as the plot. Both were filmed on location where they actually took place. Both were police procedurals.

Hawaii Five-O had a lot of interesting and innovative plots, especially for the time. They even had one about a 1975 computer hacker (!!) who was also a murderer, and the "hacking" scenes were actually a lot more realistic than what you usually see on TV. They had an interesting recurring Chinese spy super-villain, Wo Fat, who was clever enough to where you couldn't completely hate him. Most shows took place in Honolulu, but you sometimes got to see the other islands, as well.

It was a show which didn't bullshit around -- the entire hour was dedicated to crime solving, rarely featuring any kind of outside drama involving the characters.

There were some dud episodes (especially in the final two seasons), and their use of local actors (presumably via some agreement with the state) sometimes looked a bit amateurish. However, I looked past these flaws and really enjoyed it when I found the show in reruns in the 1990s. Prior to that, I was aware of its existence (my dad watched it first run), but hadn't watched it at all. It went off the air just as I was turning 8 years old.

Rockford was a very different sort of show. While Hawaii Five-O glorified the police and authority, Rockford questioned authority and infused humor into a lot of the plots. Rockford was better about not having many bad episodes (there were a few, but it was uncommon), and it aged better than Hawaii Five-O, as the Rockford character's cynicism fits well into today's age of social media.

It's hilarious that we as a society think everyone can be a dr, a lawyer, an engineer. Some people are just fucking stupid. Why can't we just accept that?

The GOAT is Hunter, there was crime fighting with soap opera level drama between him and his smokeshow partner he was fucking on and off. It was amazing. No one got away from Rick Hunter including the ladies.
