Ballys on the strip to rebrand as Horseshoe

Caesars Entertainment Inc. plans to transform Bally’s Las Vegas into a Horseshoe casino through a multi-million dollar renovation project starting this spring. The rebranding will allow the World Series of Poker to reunite with the Horseshoe brand – its original home – after more than a dozen years at the Rio.

I expected this. And VitalVegas reported the rumor last year.

But before anyone gets too excited, nothing much is changing, in all likelihood.


They are promoting it as a return to the past where Horseshoe "makes it right for the gambler", but it's going to be very disappointing when everyone finds out that it's still going to be the same 2020s scene of shitty games and stingy comps, with maybe 100x odds craps for show.

They'll probably do some Horseshoe branding to make it reminiscent of Binion's Horseshoe in some ways, but it will all be cosmetic. It's just a brand. Caesars isn't suddenly going to offer better games and better rules. I see some delusional people on social media believing that we'll be seeing 3:2 blackjack, 9/6 Jacks or Better video poker (at full tier points), and lots of generous comps. Nope. That ship has sailed.

Even worse, it's possible that the construction will be noisy, and will bother WSOP players -- both during the tournament and while trying to sleep during the day!

I don’t mind Bally’s for a night or two. Rebranding it as the Horseshoe won’t take much. Binion’s wasn’t exactly a five star resort back in the day. I’m in town right now staying at Harrah’s, if the price is the same ($9 mid-week), I’ll stay here. Harrah’s almost always upgrades me for free, since I’m Diamond Plus. Stayed in Bally's just a few times in my life, unless you count when my family went to the MGM Grand in the late '70s and early '80s (fortunately not during the 1980 fire), which later became Bally's.

The first time was a sort of staycation in the mid-2000s. Wasn't even my room. Was at some party in a suite there with my then-girlfriend, which ended around 2am. Everyone went home, including the people who rented the suite. They were going to check and go back to their place, but my girlfriend asked if we could just hang there and check out on their behalf in the morning, and they said no problem. So she and I were left alone there for the night. We didn't need the room because I lived just down the street, but might as well use it because it was already paid for, and she was good friends with the person who got the room, so they trusted us.

Seemed fun until I tried to go to sleep and the traffic noise on Flamingo was brutal.

Second time I stayed there was in the 2010s during WSOP. One of the times I got a comped suite. The others I got a regular room. I made sure to ask for "the non-Flamingo side" each time, and itw as much better. Not a great place, but not bad. I did radio from there a few times. I was going to spend some time there during the 2021 WSOP, but I ended up cancelling those dates, and instead only went for the Main, where I stayed at the Rio.

Anyway, if you go to Bally's, make sure not to get a room hanging over Flamingo, or you'll be hating life.

Harrah's...shithole

The Linq...used to be the former Imperial Palace...shithole. The Linq promenade is okay.

Flamingo....shithole. the new steakhouse is okay.

The Cromwell...shithole. Giada Italian restaurant is okay.

Bally's...shithole.

Paris...shithole. except for a couple of good restaurants.

Planet Hollywood....shithole. except for a couple of restaurants.

Caesar's Palace is the only decent hotel in the Caesar's Empire.
