    Meatloaf is DD

Not the food the singer… Just broke shortly he passed away with family including his wife by his side at age 74. He had apparently been in significantly declining health for awhile but it had been kept quiet. Obviously he’s best known for his bat out of hell album and back to hell and of course his famous appearance in Rocky Horror Picture Show. Guess 2 outta 3 wasn’t bad after all. RIP Meatloaf.

Meatloaf was pretty damn amazing and one of a kind. That being said he was only at his best when he was working with jim steinmen who died less than a year ago….

Also meatloaf predicted he would die when steinmen did.

After he died, his nurse, Mary Beth, left me a message saying how much he loved me. She said I was the one person he needed more than anyone else in his life. I don't want to die, but I may die this year because of Jim. I'm always with him and he's right here with me now.

    Absolutely touching.

The Steinman stuff with Meatloaf was incredible and then Jim tried to do an album on his own. I was one of the few who owned it and loved it. Buying the album for home and the cassette for my Camaro. Good times….RIP Meatloaf

I learned mostly about meatloaf through napster.

Steinman wrote so many great songs. All coming back to me was originally going to be meatloaf but he changed his mind and went to court to stop meatloaf from releasing it. Had Celine not covered it and meatloaf came out first it would have been another huge hit for him.

Great example of how Steinmann could write some of the greatest songs but couldn't execute them vocally without meatloaf.

I have nothing but your question made me think about what a strange career he had. I don’t think I have ever met someone who is a big Meatloaf fan.

I recall his huge album when I was a little kid. It was an incredibly popular album with people my aunt and uncles age, who are all 10-12 years older than me. Then he had a shorter run when I was in high school.

That said, I can’t ever remember anyone attending a Meat Load concert or thinking of them as huge fans. I searched top 50 Meat Loaf songs and I can’t think of any other successful artist where I think I know every word of the top 5 songs as they were all jukebox songs, and can’t recall ever hearing any of the other bottom 45 songs. Not a clue.

There are many one hit wonders, but for artists who were more than that and had prolonged success to varying degrees, the only artist I can think of that’s kind of similar is Don McLean. Where both were more than one hit wonders and were very wealthy guys still from a very limited catalog.

Everyone knows the lyrics to like 3 Don McLean songs, and very few people could name their sixth best song. I’d see McLean on the billboard for some shit casino on the California/Nevada border, or in a casino in West Virginia, so I think he was more active playing live than Meat Loaf.

I recall seeing an interview once where he said that American Pie basically set him up for life immediately and he made more money on that song and it was basically the reason anyone booked him for the next 40 years.

I think the common thing with both those guys are their big hits are songs I associate with being jukebox anthems. I can barely think of American Pie or Paradise by the Dashboard light in any other context outside being universal jukebox anthems. They are unique in that it wouldn’t shock you to hear either of those songs for decades in a truck stop plaza bar in rural GA or in a suburban bar in some upscale suburban lounge in NY. That’s a unique thing. It’s not Human League or Flock of Seagulls type one hit wonders stuff where you’d be shocked if it came out of the system many places.

Must be nice to be struck with an hour of inspiration and live off it forever.

Anyway, the list of top 50 Meat Loaf songs. Anyone who knows song 7-50 is the biggest Meat Loaf fan I’ve ever met.

Meat Loaf was my go to in the jukebox at Pizza Hut - must have been a set machine, as we moved three times and every Pizza Hut had the same rotation.

Not sure I even knew what he looked like before the obit.

Did you ever notice how you’ve never seen Meat Loaf and Louie Anderson together?

When "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights"(think that was the first hit) came out thought it was cool song especially with the baseball call in the song. Song was really popular on both AM & FM stations. So for about 2 months this song was everywhere. Got really tired of it. Passed on the rest of his songs till I saw Rocky Horror Picture Show. Loved that song. Very solid straightforward Rock and Roll song. Years later my morning rock station was talking about Meatloaf and that he was was now a high school girls softball coach and down on his luck. They called him up and dude sounded like a genuinely happy guy. That he enjoyed where he was at in life. Very amiable fellow as well. Good for him.

RIP Meatloaf and thanks for the memory.

Really? Saw his estate listed at $40 million. That Bat out of Hell album sold 43 million albums. You sure he was down on his luck and not just a perv? He seemed normal, so I’m mostly joking, but hadn’t heard of that.

I’ve heard him interviewed before also and found him an interesting guy and kind of likable. Definitely not an egotistical celebrity.

He must have had an addiction or got rolled by a manager young if he was that down before getting it back together for his run in the late 80s. I know he also did some stints on Broadway. His music was definitely kind of that style. A less talented Freddy Mercury, but talented. Just not the vocal range.

Those guys whose name you’ve always known, yet don’t know much about always interest me. He was legit a household name to anyone late 40s and above forever.

In my experience, complete truth on that last sentence. In my late teens/twenties, my group of friends listened to a fair amount of classic rock, Meatloaf was never part of that rotation. We all knew who he was, but were just kind of indifferent to his music.

In my mid-twenties, I dated a girl who was 7 years older than me. While 7 years isn't exactly a generational difference, she was the first person I met who LOVED Meatloaf.

Dunno if anybody saw this but yeah.. Weber Grills jumped the shark and had to appologize for this lovely poorly timed presser.. They sent out a release about grilling meatloaf literally when Meatloaf had just died..
