Here is what happened:
I was on the way to Vegas on Thursday night. My girlfriend and Ben were in the car, and I was driving. We left LA at about 9pm.
About 50 miles into the drive, I started to feel some weird mild nausea coming on. At first I thought maybe it was my imagination, or perhaps it was just one of those things where you feel sick for a moment and then feel better.
However, as the drive wore on, the nausea slowly increased. Then it combined with fatigue and a general feeling of illness. About 50 miles after that, I got out to get gas. I didn't need gas immediately, but I thought the fresh air might help. It did somewhat. I wasn't all better by any means, but being outside improved things a bit.
However, once back in the car, again I started to feel increasingly sick. Once we got to Yermo (about 10 miles north of Barstow, which is the halfway point), I couldn't go on. I was REALLY sick. Massive nausea, big time fatigue, and a weird really sick feeling I can't describe. I had never felt anything quite like this before, despite having stomach flus many times in the past. This felt different -- and much worse. I wondered if this was how it felt when one is dying.
I tried to use a gas station bathroom, hoping that would help matters. Nope. I was able to crap, but it wasn't diarrhea, and I felt like absolute AIDS sitting there on that grimy toilet.
There was no way I could go on any further on this drive, and I wondered if I was going to die or have some major health issue right there in the middle of the desert. There was a hospital in Barstow, but it had horrible reviews, and I was hoping not to have to use it.
My girlfriend attempted to get a hotel room in Yermo, but shockingly every room was taken. Why was everyone crowding into a motel in Yermo on a Thursday night? No idea.
She drove us back to Barstow (I could no longer drive -- or do anything at this point), and I was able to find a motel which had an open room, and verified it by calling. She went in and got the room.
I had been through Barstow over 100 times in my life, but this was the first time I ever stayed there. We could only get a 2nd floor room (ground floor was taken, and there's no elevator). When I got out of the car, again I felt slightly better from the fresh air -- enough to grab my stuff from the car, stumble up the stairs with it, and fall onto the bed of our room.
Once in bed, there was some relief. Still felt very sick and with zero energy, but the sense of deterioration and urgency was no longer there. It now felt more like a stomach flu.
From bed, I was able to call the Vegas hotel and have them chop off the first night of our multi-night stay. I wondered how I'd be in the morning. Complicating matters was that my girlfriend had a pinched nerve in her neck, so it was also very difficult to drive. She was in pain and couldn't turn her head, and I was extremely sick. Not good!
I only slept about 5-6 hours, but I woke up feeling somewhat better. I was able to complete the rest of the drive and check in that day. By the evening, I had improved even more, but had no appetite. By the following day, I was all better.
The weirdest thing was how quickly the symptoms came on. I went from 100% fine to feeling deathly ill, within 2 hours. Horrible timing, as I wouldn't have left the house had it hit earlier, and if it hit later, I would've already been in Vegas and could have just relaxed in the room. I'm now convinced it was a stomach flu I caught from Ben, as he had something similar (though not as intense) a few days earlier.
What also freaked me out was the memory of this dude I knew back in 2000. He was 49 and healthy, and embarked on a trip from LA to Vegas. He felt sicker and sicker while in the middle of the desert, finally pulled over, and died there. I'm 49 now, and kept thinking of that when I was at my worst point.

Since receiving the Pfizer booster in mid-October:
Mid October (right after booster): Three days of illness, near-103 fever
Late October: Sharp left elbow pain
Early December: Horrible swelling/pain in left ankle & foot, couldn't walk for 2 days, pain for 2 weeks
Mid December: Bizarre fast-developing illness resembling stomach flu, going from perfect to feeling deathly ill within 2 hours
