Carrie Bourassa was scientific director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s Institute of Indigenous Peoples’ Health, and also a university professor. She was fired this month when it came out that she was faking her Native American heritage.
She actually would have gotten away with it for much longer (or perhaps forever), if she hadn't repeatedly modified her claims to become more extreme, and if she hadn't gone to a TEDx talk in full tribal gear, thus attracting unwanted attention from skeptics.
Upon it being proven that she had no Native heritage, she then changed her story that she had been adopted into a tribe, but that didn't fly, either.
Now she's been fired, in what has become an embarrassing situation for the University of Saskatchewan, as well as the Canadian government.
She should have just stuck to saying she had high cheekbones and presented a DNA test "proving" she's 1/1024th Native.
