Dorian Abbot is a geophysicist at University of Chicago, and was invited to MIT to deliver a guest lecture on climate change. However, even though climate change is a controversial topic, Abbot's planned lecture itself was well accepted by the Earth Sciences department at MIT.
However, Abbot had the nerve to previously criticize race-based affirmative action programs in hiring within academia, as he felt it both was racist and devalued merit. This affirmative action debate has raged on for decades, of course, and is nothing new. However, many of the campus wokes flipped out that they would invite such an awful, bad man to speak on campus, even if his speech was not at all political, and had nothing to do with affirmative action.

The head of the MIT Earth Sciences department said they cancelled Abbot's speech because they were worried that "black students might well have been repelled if they learned of Dr. Abbot's views on affirmative action."

This is today's scientific left, everyone. Only those who hold "acceptable" social viewpoints will be allowed to participate in the scientific community. If it's found out that they have the nerve to differ in opinion about something like affirmative action, they will be disinvited from lecturing, even if their research is respected and valuable.
You should totally trust these people because they would never lie to you, and never present biased data. It's not a problem that they're all required to hold one ideology, right?
