Shaun Deeb claims someone broke into his Rio room at 6am and tried to steal from him

    https://twitter.com/shaundeeb/status/1447215029758033922

Now.. I have a few issues here. I don't think Shaun is lying, because he doesn't really have a history of outright fabricating stories. However, he said the guy was "robbing" him, but doesn't explain what that means. He doesn't detail what was stolen, if anything. He does say that the guy ran off as soon as he woke up.

However, the Rio also has a history of stupidly double-assigning rooms. This happened to Eric Sonstegard in 2013, where they double checked-in someone to Eric's room, and the guy stole from him when he got to Eric's room and found cash and an iPad laying out.

There have been similar instances like this over the years, and others in the Deeb thread have also told similar stories.

If you're looking to target Shaun Deeb, why would you do it at 6am, when he'd likely be in the room and sleeping? In fact, 6am is the WORST time to target a room for theft, because that's one of the most likely times that the person will be there. If you have access to Shaun's room, the simplest way to steal is to wait for him to be in an event, and then break in while he's gone! It's pretty easy to figure out a time to waltz into his room and steal, if that's the goal.

Clearly this wasn't a strongarm robbery, as the guy ran away when Shaun woke up. So you can't even say that this was an attempt to force Shaun to open his safe.

I think this was more likely a double checkin, and the guy ran off in fear when Shaun sat up. It is possible that the guy decided to try to steal something upon finding the opportunity (not even knowing whose room he was in), similar to what happened to Sonstegard in 2013 (though Sonstegard clearly wasn't there, while Deeb was sleeping in this case).

Hotel room latches can easily be defeated by a pro. If you’re really concerned about someone trying to get into your room while your asleep in it, carry and use a portable door alarm.

Or a portable door jammer if you don’t want to be awakened by an alarm.

Each of these items is less than $20 on Amazon.

I know this kid has been around forever, and if he was not reputable, would likely be unable to find backing. You seem skeptical without straight up accusing him of something.

In general though, I’d assume someone dusted off a backers money in the pits and is claiming he got robbed. Good luck trying to explain to some backer your room got robbed, if that’s what happened. Even if true, no one is believing you.

I know this kid has crushed tournaments forever, so I have no idea if he is worth 20 million or backed for $1500 buy ins?

Just to be honest, sounds like a story I’d tell my wife back in the day when I got drunk and dusted off $50k in the pits.

Why would you call a lawyer for a crime committed against you effectively the same day? I thought you call the cops and they bring in a detective to ascertain the crime scene if they think there is a crime, examine video surveillance, fingerprint's, etc.. What is a lawyer going to do for you less than a day after this supposed crime if someone broke into your room and presumably could have killed you? I mean you don't call a brain surgeon the day you have a first migraine. Very weird. This is much different then being accused of a crime, then you call a lawyer, this is reversed. Fuck if someone broke into my house while I was asleep and ran off I am calling 911 and probably not posting on twitter for legal help but that just is me.

If Caesars gave another guest his room key, that is negligence. If things were stolen, he has civil damages. Evidence like video tapes seem to “disappear” if you don’t preserve it quickly. You cannot rely on the cops to do so.

I get you are a lawyer and there is always a degree of skepticism against the cops, but a huge public company like Caesars is not erasing tapes over what could be a mistake and a few thousand bucks stolen, if that. Plus nothing really can be erased anymore unless your name is Hillary Clinton. There is no front desk manager scrambling to delete servers, he would not have access anyway to them. Who the fuck goes to Twitter the same day a stranger is loitering in their room. Everyone calls the cops. If you get stonewalled after a couple days you call lawyer but I doubt in any case you go to Twitter. But I am old school, I don't even have a twitter account.

I don't think he's making up the story.

At first I thought maybe he wrongly believed the guy was "robbing" him, when it could have just been an idiotic double check-in by the Rio. However, since then, he clarified (see above tweets) that indeed stuff was stolen, but he's not revealing what the guy took (not sure why).

I still think it's more likely that it was a double check-in and the guy opportunistically stole when he saw a sleeping man in the bed (not even realizing it was Deeb), but it's also possible it was an inside job, meant to victimize Shaun when he was sleeping and had his valuables there.

Amazingly, Deeb claims that the Rio won't give him info as to who entered the room, and he "needs a lawyer" to help him. Stevesbets (Steven Jacobs, now an attorney) offered to help.

It is fairly easy to flip the latch before the door is completely closed if you're not paying attention, This leaves the door not only unlocked, but actually open a crack.

A lot of poker players are just reckless and they have a "can't happen to me" mentality when it comes to personal/room safety.

this would be a wildly -ev grift... hotels log door use but also every inch of a casino has cameras in it, more so since a certain honkey shut up a concert from his hotel window.

that said, the fact that he hasnt contacted the cops is interesting, isnt it..

because if he had, then the hotel would be compelled to fork over logs/footage, and the police could, in theory, charge him with falsifying a report.

With a lot of guys, including some "name" pros, I'd say a falsified claim in order to justify the disappearance of backer money would be a possibility. In fact, I've called out this exact possibility in the past when "OMG MY SAFE WAS BROKEN INTO" stories came out. Every single time, it was either a backed player or someone with a roommate, and you can easily connect the dots.

However, Deeb does not have a reputation for lying, nor is he known to have financial issues. It would be uncharacteristic of him to outright make up a story like this. My only skepticism was that he was perhaps seeing something more sinister than it was, but if the dude really stole from him, then yeah it's pretty bad, even it was an opportunistic theft via double-checkin.

I do wonder why he hasn't called the police yet, unless he has and just hasn't reported that to the public.

With all the cameras in the hallways, lobbies, parking lots, etc.. He just called his lawyer? There is no way a front desk manager can turn a blind eye about a story of someone breaking into rooms. That is an earthquake for a hotel. Especially a public multinational company. This whole notion someone is deleting video, I cannot think of anything more ridiculous. Any manager of a reputable hotel who hears about a random guy walking through a hotel room not part of the room, is calling the cops 100% of the time. I mean come on.

I understand the convenience side of it because its downstairs... but why do these high stakes guys stay and put their BR in these shit hotel rooms at this point after all of the previous Rio fails when these guys can afford really nice places just a bit off strip along with accommodation to and from the casino.

Plus at least for me, once I am done for the day in there... I want to get the fuck out of there. But Deeb a different animal tho

literally nothing about deeb makes me think he would try to fake this but the way hes handling it is just completely ass backwards and makes it impossible to rule out something that should be incredibly easy to rule out.

he said on twitter that he wasn't going to say publicly what was stolen ("for obvious reasons"), and besides a double headed dildo with crack hidden inside of it i can't think what it could be or why he wouldn't disclose it

i thought maybe it was something as simple as weed, but that's not illegal in NV
