My 16-year-old pug passed away today

One sad part of having a dog is that there's always the inevitable day when they get very old, and then they leave you.

Otis was born in early 2005. I received him from someone else in late 2015, and he was close to 11 years old. Most people wouldn't want to take in a dog that age, but I didn't hesitate to do so.

I did think I would only get about two years with him, since the average pug only lives 12.75 years, and he was very large for his breed.

Instead, he lived out 5 1/2 more years, and stayed surprisingly healthy until near the end, when he started to deteriorate from an unknown illness. Some people pressured me to put him down this year, but he seemed to still enjoy life, and could still eat and walk normally. I just couldn't bring myself to do it -- not yet, at least.

This morning, after eating normally late last night (a burger, one of his favorite foods), he passed away in his sleep.
He was almost 16 1/2 -- the oldest dog I've ever personally known.

So I got 5 1/2 years with him, and at least he spared me from the inevitable sad day (soon) of having to choose to end his life.

It was during a walk with him in mid-October 2018 when I first felt a "crack" in my horrible, crushing psychological issues -- ones which I thought I might be stuck with for life. With no one else around at 2am, I said out loud, "Otis! Can you beleive it? I think I'm coming back!"

The below picture was taken in June 2020, when he was 15 1/2. Look how good he looked for his age! He no longer looked anywhere near this good anymore, but he lived a very long life in great health.

    RIP Otis 2005-2021

Having a dog is like a 2yr old for ever, in your case 16 years. Pretty good run for most dogs a lot of em can't see or hear for there last few years yet still good to go.
also this dependent helps to develop a strong bond so when they die the pain can be unbearable.

don't get another dog soon take your time and find the right dog as Ben is getting to the age were a dog can teach compassion and responsibility.

    RIP Otis

Losing a dog is the fucking worst.

All the same platitudes to you buddy - don’t let a week of pain ruin 16 years. And most importantly don’t you fucking dare do the selfish thing and wait to get another one. There is a freind out there that’s waiting for you. Don’t put it off.

My last dog a lab also like simps. At least pug died on his own and didn't need to be euthanized. Waited a few years to get new dog.

Ben taking it very hard. Took until now to get him to fall asleep.

I keep thinking, "Oh it's time for Otis to eat" and then I remember and feel sad. This definitely beats having to put him down, though, and that time was unfortunately coming very soon. (Many people tried to tell me that time was already here.)

Had WSOP gone on its normal dates, there's a good chance I would have been gone when this happened. So I guess that's one good thing I can say for COVID.

I have one can of dog food left, unopened. I meant to order more the other day, but forgot. I went to open that last can last night, and then remembered, "Oh wait, we have a hamburger patty in the refrigerator."

So I ripped up the burger, put it in rice, heated it in the microwave, and gave it to him. He ate the whole thing. That was his last meal, and in hindsight I'm really glad he got to have that instead of dog food.

I will probably get another dog soon. It has been 25 years since I owned a dog under 10 years old.
