    If you live on the east coast I’d fill up on gas

    A cyber attack forced the suspension of operations on a major US energy pipeline that transports 45 per cent of all fuel consumed on the East Coast.

    Colonial Pipeline said the attack took place on Friday and also affected some of its information technology systems.


    The company operates the largest refined-products pipeline in the US, transporting gasoline, diesel fuel, and home heating oil from Houston, Texas to New York Harbour.

    An outside security firm is investigating the nature and scope of the attack and the Alpharetta, Georgia-based company has also been in touch with law enforcement and federal agencies.

    “Colonial Pipeline is taking steps to understand and resolve this issue,” the company said in a statement late on Friday.

    “At this time, our primary focus is the safe and efficient restoration of our service and our efforts to return to normal operation. This process is already underway, and we are working diligently to address this matter and to minimise disruption to our customers and those who rely on Colonial Pipeline.”

    The precise nature and motive of the attack are unclear at present.

    Colonial Pipeline transports more than 100 million gallons of fuel daily, through a pipeline system spanning more than 5,500 miles between Texas and New Jersey.

    Mike Chapple, teaching professor of IT, analytics and operations at the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business, said systems that control pipelines should not be connected to the internet and be vulnerable to cyber intrusions.

    “The attacks were extremely sophisticated and they were able to defeat some pretty sophisticated security controls, or the right degree of security controls weren’t in place,” said Mr Chapple, who is also a former computer scientist with the National Security Agency.

    There is widespread alarm at the vulnerability of the US’s critical infrastructure following an unsuccessful attack on a water treatment plant in Florida that sought to compromise the water supply.

    These fears are especially heightened in light of the SolarWinds hacking of US government agencies and private companies orchestrated by Russia.

    Microsoft president Brad Smith said that hack was “the largest and most sophisticated attack the world has ever seen”.

    The Biden administration is undertaking a new effort to help electric utilities, water districts, and other critical industries protect against potentially damaging cyberattacks.

    Anne Neuberger, the deputy national security adviser for cybersecurity and emerging technology, told The Associated Press in April that the goal was to ensure that control systems serving 50,000 or more Americans have the core technology to detect and block malicious cyber activity.

    Since then, the White House has announced a 100-day initiative aimed at protecting the country’s electricity system from cyberattacks.

    Owners and operators of power plants and electric utilities have been encouraged to improve their capabilities for identifying cyber threats to their networks.

    This includes concrete milestones to put technologies into use to spot and respond to intrusions in real-time.

    The Justice Department has also announced a new task force dedicated to countering ransomware attacks in which data is seized by hackers who demand payment from victims in order to release it.

    So it’s my understanding (and I could very well be dead wrong) that this story is being under reported as to not to cause a panic. There are already gas stations in the mid Atlantic that are closed due to lack of inventory.

    They say there is 100M gallons going through this pipeline at any one time and if you read between the lines here they are still it’s going to be closed for the rest of the week. Sure there are other sources of fuel and there are reserves on the other end...... but the fact remains they have 100M gallons going through because there is a demand for it. Take 7 days out and that’s a big drop in supply.

    No harm in filling up today and bringing a gas can with you.

    It’s more an issue with the mid and southeast. The northeast has different pipelines and ports.

    I need to squat a thread for the coming shutdown of a regional power grid. If there was a future on this event within the next 5 years I’d buy it. I’m leaning Northeast for maximum financial & societal impact.

    You can get a generator but without data it’s still lights out.

    Right - and there is a bunch of gas coming in via port Everglades so Florida is covered..... but they are obviously going to need to move around supply for a while if this goes on.

    One of the joys of watching sports on the MLB & NHL apps is the regional advertising. Canadian local ads are fascinating especially.

    I watch a lot of Dodgers, Padres, Angels and I saw an ad for Yoshi. It’s an app for fuel delivery. Uber for petrol. They still stressed the contactless (covid) aspect recently.

    Only in California would the notion of driving a 1000 gallon tanker to your home to fuel up your 20 gallon Toyota make sense to someone. There have been others like WeFuel etc.

    Not too mention the safety aspect if this ever caught on. The mammoth inefficiency of such a model.

    I’ve never had food delivered so you can imagine the ridicule I feel. Incredulous these startups get funding.

    Still trying to figure how this pipeline issue is affecting AZ.. Prices jumped 20 cents overnight from 2.99 at most stations around me to 3.19..

    i believe Arizona gets a large share of its rfg (reformulated gasoline) from refineries located in Los Angeles...and about this time of year, as per state law, California refineries switch over to less polluting gasoline that is more expensive, so you are probably experiencing the effects of the switch over....funny thing, despite the transportation distance, at the pump gasoline is cheaper in Arizona than in California despite being the same (California taxes)
