Vlogger Matt Vaughn WINS Ignition $1 Milly GTD tournament for $136k -- Doesn't Get Paid

In February 2021, Vlogger Matt Vaughn won the $535 Buy-in - $1 Million GTD Tournament on Ignition.

However, he had previously been banned in 2017.

In 2017 he was living/playing out of Maryland, a banned state from Ignition. He won a tournament for $16k and when they were verifying his info upon payout, they notified him they were going to pay him the $16k, but close his account as he was playing from a banned state in their TOS.

He moved to Vegas within the last year, (Nevada is also a banned state) but found other pros were playing from friends accounts that were based from allowed states.

----You are allowed to play on Ignition from Nevada if you're just visiting, however if you are a resident of the state, you are technically not allowed.

Playing from someone's account on Ignition isn't such a big deal in the community as terms of "multi-accounting" because of the anonymous tables. It's not the same as playing on like PokerStars or ACR under the screen name of some fish.

Where Matt Vaughn went wrong, HE LIVE STREAMED HIM PLAYING/WINNING THE TOURNAMENT ON TWITCH!!!!!

    How stupid can you be?

As his friend was going through the verification process to pay out the $136k, they found out that Matt Vaughn was actually playing the event, and not the friend.

They refused to payout, and everyone else in the tournament moved up 1 spot (2nd got 1st, 3rd got 2nd)

It's a heartbreaking situation, but it's hard to feel bad for the guy as he live streamed himself breaking their absolutely clear TOS.

I have absolutely ZERO problem with his disqualification. And bumping everyone else up one spot for the payouts is the proper thing to do. As for Matt, he is a SCHMUCK for playing in the tournament on a platform that previously banned him, and an even bigger SCHMUCK for live streaming it.

I feel bad for the guy for sure. Just incredibly poor judgment. If you have a ban from a site for any reason whatsoever, then playing on it, in any way, leaves you wide open to being free-rolled. Common sense would be if you are going to still do it, it must be totally anonymous and his friend needs to be willing to take credit for it. Easy to beat up on him. I just can’t square up being banned from the site and playing this tournament for anyone to see. Of course he didn’t figure it would be the score of his life.

Watch his vlog on the incident for the amazing details. Matt negotiated a chop with the 2nd place finisher which was done private since ignition doesn't facilitate chops. Matt equity in that chop was 16k if he lost the heads up match. The player that was moved into 1st after ignition disqualified Matt paid him the 16k. My faith in humanity is restored. How many people would honor the side agreement? I would have and I think most players would also, but it's nice to see that it happened. Poker players get a bad rap due to the scammers like Mike Posel, but this outcome shows that most poker players are honest...imo

Did a radio segment on this. You can go listen if you like. I played much of his video and stopped it for comment several times.

He's delusional. The guy was ALREADY CAUGHT playing from a state where he wasn't allowed, and Ignition did the right thing by paying him and then banning him.

Then he had the nerve to continue playing anyway from a friend's account, in ANOTHER BANNED STATE!

And then he wanted them to pay him a second time!!

You gotta be fucking kidding me.

However, that "Tom" guy actually stiffed him out of $5k. He didn't say this because he didn't want to come off as an ingrate, but it's absurd that Matt wasn't considered the "winner" of their heads up match, just because Ignition disquaiified him later for an internal rule violation. His agreement with Tom was that they were playing each other heads up for $5k. Matt won fair and square. Why didn't he get the money?

Instead, Tom just sent him the $17k -- the amount Matt would have gotten had he LOST the heads up match. Kinda fucked up.

A guy who listens to radio and frequently anonymously comments, wrote this:

The blogger Matt deserved zero from the guy who won the tournament because the guy who won the tournament had ZERO CHANCE of ever getting money from Matt the Vlogger cheater. I could not believe your "hot take" on that one. Do you not understand that the guy who was declared the winner in effect could never ever collect a dime from Matt the vlogger. You got this one wrong. Can't win them all.
I wish I could respond to this guy directly because I don't know what he means.

He's saying that he could "never collect a dime from Matt the vlogger", but yes he could. They had friends vouch for each other, and both Matt and Tom decided they trusted each other enough to make this deal.

Sure, Matt COULD have stiffed him, just as Tom could have stiffed Matt (and kind of did, for $5k).

There were basically 4 possible scenarios here:

    1) Matt wins heads up, doesn't get disqualified. Matt sends $22k to Tom. Apparently Matt already had done this (before gettnig disqualified), so obviously he wasn't a scammer.

    2) Tom wins heads up, Matt doesn't disqualified. Tom sends $17k to Matt.

    3) Matt wins heads up, gets disqualified. Tom sends $22k to Matt. This is what happened, but Tom only sent $17k, somehow declaring that Matt "lost" the heads up match because of what Ignition did to his account???

    4) Tom wins heads up, Matt gets disqualified. Tom sends $17k to Matt.

So #3 happened, but somehow Tom treated it as if it were #4.

Either COULD have stiffed the other, but that would have cost both reputation points in poker, which could have harmed each of them going forward. Tom was backed and probably would have had a harder time finding future backing if he did this, and Matt has a semi-popular Vlog, and his following would have taken a hit if word got out that he scammed Tom.

So it was likely both were going to be honorable here. Tom, however, wormed out of $5k, knowing that Matt would be embarrassed to call him out for it, seeing it as getting $17k being better than getting $0. This is especially true because of the "M word" (multiaccounting) involved, and many people in poker have a hard time understanding that Matt wasn't CHEATING here -- only breaking Ignition TOS.
