Normally I would be annoyed that desertrunner just started a news thread, after everything that has happened this week here, but I actually meant to start this thread myself, so I'll allow it.

I knew this was possible, but the optimistic side of me said maybe they were just posturing in 2020.

If this is really happening, it's terrible. It will ruin the Supreme Court. It will establish a precedent where the party in power just keeps adding justices until they get the majority. The number 13 isn't random. Adding 4 justices (all D) would put the balance to 7-6 liberal, whereas right now it's 6-3 conservative.

If RBG had retired during Obama's 2nd term, I bet Dems would be looking to increase it to 11, as they'd only need 2 more justices.

But this won't end. If Republicans win in 2024, they will add two more justices to get it back to 8-7.

And so on.

This won't happen because of the filibuster, but it should happen.

Republicans refused to even consider Obama's nomination in February 2016, an unprecedented move, saying "the American people should choose who will nominate this Justice." Then in October 2020 they rushed Barrett onto the Court, completely abandoning what they said before.

Fuck them. Get rid of the filibuster, pass HR 1, pack the Court, admit DC and PR as states, then we'd be closer to fairness.

Why exactly should it happen? What specific deficienies are happening in the SCOTUS right now where the Justices are indicating this needs to happen? Are they over worked, can not take on more cases? Or want to take on more cases so they need more justices? Are they talking to each other and saying- "We need more justices here"? Did they contact Biden and request this? Are we so behind right now that we need to add more staff?
