If these searches were being done in good faith, then I would disagree. However, given the existence of civil forfeiture, where dogs are sometimes used to create such a bogus pretense, I agree that this practice should end.

In general I would like to see recreational drug use decriminalized, but not the sale of recreational drugs. Kind of like online poker currently stands in most states -- not illegal to play, but illegal to run a site.

I don't have a problem with drug dogs being used to catch actual drug dealers in the act. I do have a problem with the dogs being used as a tool for civil forfeiture theft, or to arrest people carrying around small amounts of drugs for personal use. (However, driving while under the influence of drugs should be aggressively prosecuted.)

Surprised I hadn’t heard of this one. I can confirm this was not the TSA contractor nor the airport police. I’m looking into it some more

It's hilarious that we as a society think everyone can be a dr, a lawyer, an engineer. Some people are just fucking stupid. Why can't we just accept that?

I just learned that the father of civil forfeiture in the US is.....

    JOSEPH R. BIDEN!!

    Not joking.

He introduced the bill allowing it in 1983.

He has admitted that some things he previously supported ended up being bad ideas. He can admit mistakes. Still waiting for any Republican to do that, particularly any Trump supporter.

So when is Biden going to correct this 38-year-old mistake?

He's President with all 3 houses in his party, and civil forfeiture is unpopular with many Republicans, too. Should be a slam dunk to fix this. Why hasn't he?

Didn't Obama reduce or eliminate it with Holder as AG, then Trump picked it back up again?

I'd like to see it eliminated but Biden has just a few things going on right now. A lot of Trump fuckups to undo. When this gets into his ear it will get done.

As usual, Democrats are taking responsibility and Republicans are whining, denying and deflecting.

    Wrong decade, bro.

The crime bill was in 1994.

I'm actually cool with that bill, even though Biden was heavily involved.

We're talking about the 1983 civil forfeiture bill, which was an abomination, and which now PRESIDENT Biden doesn't seem to be interested in reversing.

This shit has stolen a ton of $ from our own poker and gambling community, so yeah, I feel pretty strongly about it.

well that's one of the bills he regrets. still though, the reason civil forfeiture blew up is because of the war on drugs and the side effects it has had on the 4th amendment.

and all of that being said people are starting to get about CF and starting to take action to repeal these laws because in most cases it is a shitshow.

Another horrible story about legalized theft using CAF (civil asset forfeiture).

Wait a minute…. If he had the “$87k in cash in his vehicle after [the] traffic stop”, when exactly did the cops steal his money?

Perhaps you meant “Former active duty Marine is now suing NV Highway Patrol after traffic stop for theft of $87k in cash he had in his vehicle[.]”

    You’re welcome.

I assume this occurred on a notorious stretch of highway in northern Nevada's I-80, in Humboldt County.

It is assumed that some cars will have cash due to the casinos in the area, frequented by people in the greater Salt Lake City area. They have also received tips from casino employees elsewhere, that certain patrons are leaving with a lot of cash. In addition, they stop randoms from out of state with ticky-tack violations, invent a reason to search their vehicle, and hope to get lucky.

We will see if Joe Biden, the father of civil forfeiture, has the balls to snuff out the cancer he started.
