I'm considering visiting Black Hawk.
Someone told me about a good 30-60 limit holdem game in Colorado. Is that in Black Hawk?
This site is usually fairly accurate

It's hilarious that we as a society think everyone can be a dr, a lawyer, an engineer. Some people are just fucking stupid. Why can't we just accept that?
It’s at the Ameristar in Black Hawk, an hour from Denver. It’s a 30/60 with a half kill (50/100). I went there a week ago. I played 3 hours and lost $300. They are playing 6 handed tables right now and the players are aggressive. I don’t know if that was because they are gamblers, or properly adjusting to short handed play. I think you’d do well. Me, I’ll probably wait til they make it a full ring game. If I can beat the 20/40 at Commerce, I’m sure I’d do fine here in Colorado.
Be prepared for chilly temps at night. The wind can be intense even in summer.

You can drive into Blackhawk from Idaho Springs on I-70 or drive up the Clear Creek Canyon from from Denver thru Golden (Coors Brewery). There are a couple of those pan-for-gold sites on the Clear Creek road. They put the gold you find in little clear vials to take with you.

Super-loose O8 games can be gold when you have the nuts both ways and morons pay you off (plus already dumped a shitload in the pot), but these can be super maddening because there's so many ways to get fucked in limit O8. Games like that become a card catching contest, where you have the edge due to superior starting hand selection, but from there it's just the luck of what gets dealt out on the board. I don't like that. I prefer to outplay fish both pre AND post flop.
Similar game exists at limit holdem at the Hustler Casino in LA. 25-50 limit. It's one of those time warp mid-2000s era "everyone sees the flop" games. Last time I played it I got clobbered, because every AK I had missed, every high pair got outflopped, and every set I had got cracked by some complete garbage. I lost like $2700. I walked away not having liked the experience, because the pot was so bloated by the flop (often with several raises, 8 or 9 ways) that everyone chased to the end, and it was literally a card catching contest at that point. So you're really at the mercy of the deck, and the variance is way too big.
My ideal game is where it's shorter handed, where there's a few passive fish and the other players are just tight/straightforward. Drop me in a game like that, and short of running awful, I'm going to crush it.
Sounds like the 15-30 limit Omaha High only game at Harrah's New Orleans. Never less than 7 to the flop and pretty much everyone is priced in at that point so folding post is rarely +EV if you flop any kind of draw at all.
It hasn't restarted post-pandemic yet, probably because the games are only 7-handed at the moment.
And I can vouch for the Ameristar 30-60. (At least pre-pandemic)
Good call. You won't regret it.
A couple other things: Maybe you already have it booked, but if not be ready for some serious rental car sticker shock. The companies sold off large percentages of their fleets at the start of the pandemic, and now that demand is recovering they can't keep up.
Also, hopefully this is a non-issue by the time your trip starts but COVID restrictions in CO may vary widely by county. Of course the bluer the county, the tighter the restrictions, meaning that the Denver metro, Boulder and points north on the I-25 corridor, as well as the wealthy white "woke" mountain areas like Aspen, Vail, Telluride/Durango and Summit County will likely be more restrictive than Colorado Springs and Grand Junction (which are as red as it gets for big cities in the West) and other rural areas, especially in the southern and far western parts of the state. Up until 10 days ago Colorado used a colored county tier system similar to California.

Yes, win! But I have a real prediction, something will go unexpectedly wrong and you will need the flashlight and it saved the day for you and the family. Then you will go on the Druff show and tell the story and say- I never thought I would need the light, but it worked out perfect, very useful and we were ok. That’s how the Druff stories usually go- an unforeseen incident, impeding doom, unexpected solution saves the day and everyone happy at the end.
I would also like to see a thread like this about Canada some day in the future. I think Druff did Montana 2-3 years ago and shared pics on FB.
Druff, have you made a reservation for a rental car yet for this trip? I saw a report on the shortages related to the COVID pandemic and it mentioned how rental cars are likely to hard to get this summer because the major rental car companies sold off a lot of inventory to save money during the pandemic.
Do you golf?
I don't golf, and even if I did, I wouldn't drag the family along for that. I do have an interest in getting into golf one day though.
Yes, Mumbles, I have a car reservation. I was alarmed at the price, but then I realized why. Oh well. At least I have one. I am a bit nervous that I'll get there and there won't actually be any cars, and I'll be fucked.
Legit concern. Have you given any thought to getting a separate rental car reservation at another rental company as partial insurance against the current reservation turning out to be a phantom? Might be worth the late cancelation fee just to reduce the risk of your Colorado vacation hitting a major snag before you even leave the airport.
