There are ample "red rocks" areas (Garden of the Gods is one), just without the amphitheater.

I'm sure there's better spots but have had fun days on the Poudre River; not the hardest but definitely some class III action.

Yeah there are a few places you can pan or go down in old mines and even get a bag of raw ore that will have a tiny amount of gold in it.
Yeah Ben might like doing this.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone, I am processing them all and figuring out where I'll go. Keep 'em coming.

When are you going? The MLB All-Star game will be at Coors 7/13
It's hilarious that we as a society think everyone can be a dr, a lawyer, an engineer. Some people are just fucking stupid. Why can't we just accept that?

Haven't decided yet. That date is one possibility.

All Star games are really fun, especially for kids.

I went to the 2003 home run derby / game in Chicago (White Sox). Have to think the derby at Coors Field would be epic.

Druff, I spend a lot of time in a town west of Colorado Springs.

Royal Gorge is beautiful. You can zip line across and its really affordable. Dunes park is ok. Sandy. Believe it or not. There is no food there, or even close, so pack a picnic. A lot of people swim in the creek, so again, be prepared with swimsuits, towels, bottled water.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison is amazing. Like the grand canyon- very stunning. Arrive early if you want to hike down, but it would take less than a day to hike down and up- just start early in the day.

White water rafting anywhere on the Arkansas river is great. Like a roller coaster with cold water and an element of danger. You can do this in the Royal Gorge but also further west down 50 highway Choose a smaller raft guide rather than the big ones with multiple buses. Again, affordable- less than $100pp for a half day.

He used to give raft and horseback tours...gave me the name of some outfit but that was years ago.

    Bring your Proof of Vaccination.

    Cliffs:
Denver’s Bar Max Requires Proof Of COVID Vaccination For Indoor Service
Bar Max in Denver is now open after being closed for much of the pandemic. Patrons can enjoy a cocktail inside only if they provide proof of vaccination. Owner Marshall Smith reopened the bar last Friday once he was fully vaccinated.

The stretch of Interstate 70 through Glenwood Canyon is the single most beautiful stretch of interstate highway in the country IMO. A must-see.

Also an engineering marvel. The canyon is so narrow in spots that the eastbound and westbound lanes had to be built practically on top of each other.

Wildwood Casino in Cripple Creek is the highest casino in the world at approximately 9,500 feet and change.

At some point while in the Denver metro, eat at a Ted's Montana Grill and get a bison steak. SO much leaner, packed with minerals, and all-around better for you than traditional beef.

The one huge downside about this for Druff in particular is that traffic to and from Denver to to reach stretch of I-70 during the summer is likely to be super frustrating because of all of the tourists and truck traffic.

Good point, Mumbles. Especially if he makes that drive on a weekend.

Thanks everyone. I spent much of last night constructing an itinerary. Going to fly into Denver and eventually make my way all the way back home in a rental car.

I last saw most of this stuff almost 40 years ago, so it will be nice to see again. I have incorporated a lot of your suggestions, so this was a very useful thread for me.

Tomorrow night I will start with the unenviable task of booking the flight, the car, and a ton of hotels. That's my least favorite part of road trips -- arranging all of that shit. I'm good at it, but I find it tedious.

Anyway, will be nice to travel for the first time in 2 years.

If you have any further suggestions, keep them coming.

So I am crossing Steamboat Springs off my list.

My main interest there was Strawberry Park Hot Springs, which on the surface, seemed pretty cool:

It's up a mountain from Steamboat Springs, and has various natural hot springs pools ranging from cold to hot.

Unfortunately, there are a TON of reviews about the awful/nasty management of the place. Go here and scroll through a few pages, and you'll see what I mean: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Re..._Colorado.html

Even if I can keep my head down and avoid incurring these dudes' wrath, there's no way I want to give my business to a place which treats its customers this way.

So I looked for other hot springs in the area, and found two. One of them is in town, and claims to be a "hot springs", but in reality it's just a bunch of swimming pools.

The other is a real hot springs and is on public land, but is fed by an ugly runoff pipe, and reports say that "the homeless sometimes use it for bathing". No thanks.

So I've modified my itinerary to skip Steamboat Springs, and will go elsewhere.

It took over ten years to build the interstate thru Glenwood Canyon. Most of it built on candilever. You're right. One of the nicest stretches of interstate in existence.

Based upon go_buccos' post, I made sure to pass through this stretch in my plans.
