I just don't quite understand what separates the successful and not-so-successful on there. It makes sense when a low-grade celebrity makes bank at a site like that, or when a really hot chick gains a following.

This is because people love to feel as if someone cares about them, knows them, sees you and all that good stuff. It just feels more real to someone then, and right or wrong that matters to some people, they will begin to live in this semi-delusional reality maybe.
