Central time zone cold spell -- southern Texas in the 10s

Huge cold spell has been going on in the entire central time zone this weekend. Texas is having the most unusual weather of the weather, as it's usually mild during the winter in the southern half of the state.

Here's a selection of temps right now:

    Minneapolis -13
    Chicago 1
    Milwaukee 0
    Des Moines -8
    Kansas City -5
    St. Louis 1

    Now ready for Texas?

    Houston 27
    Dallas 11
    El Paso 16
    San Antonio 13
    Austin 13
    Lubbock 2
    Amarillo -2

Most of these Texas cities will be in the 60s and 70s on Saturday.

    Amazing.

Tony Bigcharles is in Houston and reported on Twitter that the electricity at his hotel went out about 8 hours ago. And they have electric heat. He might be getting pretty chili about now.

Texans don't have the right kind of tires on their cars and no experience for that kind of weather. Even if you have the right tires and experience the other Texas drivers don't. The danger is them taking you out on the highway. It's super dangerous driving down there right now because of all the idiots on the highway.

    I've been reading about this.

A ton of power failures in Texas because so many people are running the heat at once, and they never have demand like this.

So people are sitting there freezing their asses off.

I had the power fail in my hotel room at Harrah's Lake Tahoe about 4 years ago, when it was 0 degrees outside. It got colder and colder in the room, and after about 6 hours, I finally had enough and was about to go down to the front desk and ask what was going on.

Then I noticed half the hallway was lit and half was dark. Was the power failure only partial? Yes, it was.

So I went downstairs (I had to take the stairs from the 17th floor, unfortunately), and had them switch me to a room down the hall which had power.

They tried to talk me into staying, telling me it would come back "soon", but I didn't buy it, and switched. Felt good to get back into warmth.

What cold spell? At least not in South Florida. Yesterday, it was 84 degrees (feels like 87) and 94% Humidity. It was Schvitz City. I can't imagine a 70 degree difference in temps between South Florida and Dallas. Mind blowing.

It's hilarious that we as a society think everyone can be a dr, a lawyer, an engineer. Some people are just fucking stupid. Why can't we just accept that?

yeah that sounds like it's time to move to Florida to me...

Its 81 degrees and Sunny right now, mid February of course, sometimes I myself have to be a little more appreciative of how nice the weather is living down here, because I don't know why but. The past couple years, the constant heat kinda has wore on me a little, maybe more then usual but I get over it. But maybe its because we wont start getting the constant 85+ for about ~9 Months until next months lol. That shit gets old, hot and hotter =)

But I get to go to the beach in February, so there is that =)....

Some footprints in the snow yesterday on my sister’s back patio in El Paso, Texas. They apparently got 5 inches total over the past few days.

Take what you see in this video and imagine someone driving up to a stop sign or traffic light and hitting the brakes. They are going to skid right through the intersection. To many people driving on that shit for the ice for the first time don't know that. The only way they learn is by it happening to them.

Tony Bigcharles reported 7 hours ago that the electricity and heat at his hotel was still out. He had spent $343 on an uber going around Houston looking for another hotel room with no success. Sold out. But 3 hours ago reported that the electricity is back on. But he has to be out of his room by Wednesday with no place to go because everything is sold out. People must be packing into the hotels because their electricity is out.

Edit: Just heard a lot of people are sleeping in their cars.

Ice is downright scary. I damn near died twice due to it. First was the random car out of control deal where I was inches from going over an embankment. Second was when I was in my early 20s and slipped on black ice, I was walking on a sidewalk, I slipped direction right on grass. If I had fallen left I would have been killed as I would have fell into traffic. Crazy thing was it was like 40 degrees but there were still patches of ice since it was early in the morning and I was walking to McDonalds to pick up breakfast. I am truly blessed.

There is a solid inch of ice covering everything here. Every step I took today was like a scene from a movie where someone is trying to cross shit as the ice breaks.

Lots of people in my area have back up generators and at least a portable one that could run a heater, fridge, blender, charge electric car. Power goes off here more often than Texas I assume.
