This has been going on awhile. At this point for good or bad most of our institutions (including the FBI) have realized that the people who support them (generally upper middle class neoliberal elite Democrats) actually want them to openly persecute their perceived political enemies; and no one else supports or trusts them regardless (for good reason IMO); so the mask has come off and it is just open season.
And as I have said before it definitely helps that the Republican Party is incompetent clowns for the most part. Could you imagine what a competent opposition would do to the Democrat Party in the next 2 years at the ballot box? It would be a complete slaughter at the ballot box and the Democratic Party would have to go full China style authoritarian beatdown to stay in power at all. But with an opposition led by Trump, McConnell, Boebbert, et. al. they can get away with a lot.
