    Scotch

I know that this thread has been done before on other forums but I would like some fresh input and don't feel like scouring DD.

If I drink alcohol these days it's only scotch. I've stopped drinking beer since working out a lot more as even small amounts, like 2-3 beers the previous evening, leave me feeling bloated and lethargic. I used to drink vodka here and there but just find it boring now.

I really like McCallan 12 and Talisker so far. Tonight while out I tried Laprohaig and found it unique but ultimately too strange to be enjoyable.

I still take it with a bit of ice but am gradually phasing this out as I'm really starting to like the flavors even more than the effect.

Give me some other suggestions. I tend to only have 1-2 average size glasses about 3x/week if this makes any difference.

McCallan 30 is very tasting. Have you tried any small batch bourbons? Pappy Van Winkle 23 is my favorite.

Although I enjoy a fine scotch now and then, I don't know enough about that spirit except to say you cannot always rely on price for quality.

Additionally, as a public service announcement I would like to warn all whiskey drinkers not to waste fine scotch like this:

If you didn't enjoy Laphroig, then stay away from the other Islay Scotches, they all have that very smoky, peaty taste (ie. Lagavullin, Ardbeg, etc). Similar to macallan and Talisker that you might like is the Oban 14, GlenMorangie 12, and/or Highland Park 12 or 15.

Around 60 bucks a bottle/ It is a good starter scotch that even someone that drinks 2k bottles will really like.

This is my favorite scotch. It is around 130 a bottle and I drink it 3-4 times a week.. It is aged in Rum Casks which give it all kinds of great flavor.

I would stay away from Lagavulin or any smoky scotch to start. Even though they are good, it isnt a good starting point imo.

Also, a lot of these 30 year old 700 usd bottles are a rip off. Johnny Walker Blue Label is probably the biggest rip off of them all. It really is a 40 dollars bottle but because of the marketing they get suckers that dont know any better to buy it.

I'll definitely give the Balvenie a try the next time I am out.

I think I'll hold off on dropping over $100/bottle until I'm convinced that I could appreciate it. A friend and I have decided to do a blind taste test to see how persuaded we are by the name of the scotch, getting a cheap/mid level/'high' grade bottle and sampling all three to see what we prefer.

Unlike beer or vodka, I never really drink scotch to excess as it gets me too drunk. IMO it's much more pleasant when used moderately.

you don't have to spend $100 + for good Scotch especially just starting out

Dalmore, Dewars 12 ,Johnny Walker Black, Double Black, Green, Cardu, Pinch all very good 12 year old +
under $50 the Green maybe over $50

Macallan 18 is overrated. Glenlivet is an oldie but goodie.

    Onto to Irish Whiskey..

Friend and I finished off a bottle of Knappogue Castle 12 yr yesterday and its the best 42 dollars you will ever spend on Irish Whiskey. Red Breast is also delicious but 10 dollars more. Irish Powers($35 ish) is another great brand and its even better than Jameson. Kinda how Don Julio>Patron.

Did a blind taste test with Balvenie 12, Glenlivet and Johnnie Walker Red.

    I ranked them accordingly:

    1. Balvenie 12
    2. Glenlivet
    3. JW Red

My buddy went Glenlivet, Balvenie 12, JW Red.

I thought Balvenie was clearly the best of the 3 but really liked Glenlivet as well. JW red was a huge drop off. Money talks, I guess.

Still prefer the McCallan 12 over the Balvenie but it's close. Here's hoping this new hobby doesn't get excessive.
