Updates on The Dirt...

This week’s episode was good.
The mining season isn't all that long depending on where you are at and the altitude. In the Alaska Range it's usually well into June before the snow is melted off enough. The first work the front end loaders do is remove snow. Once the equipment is running it's straight thru until the water won't run and everything freezes up, usually sometime in October.
When starting a new placer you have to divert the creek so you can run the dirt below it. Its gets richer with gold the farther down you go. The best is right on top of the bedrock because the gold is heavier than everything else and that's as far down as it can go.
With the plant you are basically washing rocks. The dirt and rocks are dropped into the shaker box where water sprays them. The bigger rocks shake out the opposite end. A front end loader has to carry the big rocks away or else it will clog up the plant. There are holes in the bottom plate to allow the water, dirt and smaller rocks to fall through to the bottom level where it is all swept into the sluice box.
The streams are clear and environmental laws don't allow muddy water to be quickly returned to the stream. You have to build settling ponds to allow the dirt to settle before the water is returned to the stream.
In October the water will continue to run below freezing for several days but eventually the plant freezes up and the season is over. Alaska/Yukon placer miners get long vacations because it will be May to June before they can get back in....depending on where the placer is located and the altitude.

Bump for updates.
Catching up on the show back episodes. Anyone else watching?
What I’d like to see is the Oregon crew pick up and move to an Alaska location. They aren’t getting much in Oregon.
The season is wrapped up, any thoughts?
