Question Any flashlight enthusiast (geeks) here?

I am a flashlight geek/enthusiast only because I use them alot. I am also a desert person that loves running from So Cal up the I-15 to Las Vegas. With that in mind, I just use flashlights alot and prefer the tactical types with USB recharging capabilities. Some of my main brands are- Pelican, then Surefire for the pistols and a Streamlight. I do like the Streamlight Protac HPL light right now, but dont have one.

Here is the slimmer Protac HL that is USB rechargeable-

Ive also been chatting with a member here about a rock solid long term USB flashlight investment. I did recommend that Streamlight ProTac HPL to him or the slimmer HL.

Anyone else use or like certain brands or models?

Actually, when desertrunner first brought his enthusiasm for flashlights to me, I didn't get it, and mostly wrote it off.

Then I was on a hike this year where I went too far too late, and it was pitch dark for much of the hike back. I thought to myself, "I can get by with the light on my iPhone, but how awesome would it be to have a badass flashlight in this spot?"

I started looking into them recently and actually kinda get it now. I'm actually going to get one for Ben as a gift, as he likes the idea of using a flashlight to see things at night all the way across the canyon, or whatever.

Still deciding on which one to get.

It's one of those areas of interest which can seem stupid at first, but is actually kinda cool when you look into it more.

^^^ Thats a good story, thanks Druff!

I should tell mine here on how I got deep into it...

Back in 2007, my Utah based buddy and I were coming back on the EB I-80 from Wells, Nv towards our hotel in West Wendover. It was around 10 pm and pitch black in the middle of the Nevada desert. We got a flat tire on his compact car and I got started changing it and the only light we had was some key chain thing, I think. And then the cheap factory tire iron stripped the nut on the tire, so we were stuck. Had to call AAA and the cold lady on the phone back east asked us where we were and what cross street- "Lady, we are on the side of I-80 in the dark and no cross street". AAA showed up 30+ minutes later, had lights and we were able to get the tire swapped out and back on the road.

Two lessons learned- Always have an upgraded cross welded tire iron in your car and use it instead of the factory crap provided. And have a good non-cheap flashlight in your car (USB rechargeable preferred). And have a AAA card too. Anyways, I'll always have a good light in my vehicles and in my travel bags. I like to road travel and mid-level hotels and figure some time in the future the power might go out and I'll be glad I had a light. Also if your dating a chick and have an over night bag, have a good flashlight as well.

A good rock solid USB flashlight is a real lifetime investment. I really kinda am a desertrunner and a good light goes with me and my firearm and pocket knife in addition to a cell phone and old school Garmin GPS.

One of my favorites that now discontinued-

An acquaintance used to collect them as well. He had about 5 or 6 of them in a few different colors. Most of them were black too.

His were more flexible and came in different sizes as well. This is him shopping for them.

You know what, I'm sold. I've always bought these shitty flashlights at Walmart or the drugstore, and inevitably what happens is the D-batteries corrode. Then when I actually need one, the shits don't work.

I probably have 3 or 4 dead flashlights in my home right now an 0 functional ones.

For Ben, I like the newer Nebo Redline X, the price is just right for the jew wallet and it fits in the hand well. I dont like the rubber cover for the USB slot, but it might be a minor point. A great light for the price, I might get one just to collect, cant beat it at $26. Ben might not need 1800 lumens, but its a nice option. BUT I would still get the Streamlight HPL for you or the slimmer HL, both USB rechargeable and have a lifetime warranty.

A funny thing Druff, you know how youre hard core into poker, there are guys out there that are the same into flashlights, I mean DEEP into it and make their own lights and fight about different aspects, etc. Im not that deep, Im more of a survivalist and see them as a needed tool and part of a system.

Speaking of desert running, I would like to do some overnight SUV camping in the future off of the I-95 just outside of Las Vegas in Nye County. I would like to find a desolate place to camp and watch the military aircraft land at the USAF base. Last time I was there, I saw an unmanned drone land in the day time. I figured watching some night time landings off in the distance next to a camp fire would be fun.

I have a friend who is about 18 years old and we were chatting about lights one time and he was kinda interested and then bought a Pelican 2380r and later texted me how much he has unexpectably used it it during power outages, etc. He's a light geek now for sure.

Me too. However, when we chat, he's usually measuring my 'flashlight' with his mouth. He never can seem to measure the entire thing though.

    Practice makes perfect though

I think Druff is getting a tactical light soon and I hope he gives a review of it on a future PFA show.

I give a firm NO to that video. Trunite and WowTac are unknown and unproven names. These are consumer level lights that do not have a track record, not field tested and not carried by law enforcement officers. Are those light USB rechargeable, doesnt matter.

I rather see Druff go with a proven and field test light that has a track record. Remember, a light is an investment and should last you atleast 20 years. I'd still go with Pelican or Streamlight as a lifetime safety tool investment.

Great call, mine just came in.

My motivation is primarily to have a flashlight on hand when I go into the mountains, as it gets perilously dark on cloudy nights.

Also trying to up my 'dad game' now that I'm with child by building up the tools and trinkets needed around the house that I've previously never really given much attention to.

Sometimes the headlamp isn't quite enough (need an upgrade there as well), so glad to have a dependable source going forward.

Awesome! Can you please give us a review here once you get it up and running. I’m a geek and love real life reviews. Thanks

Noted flashlight has held up for a full year, thanks desert.

Provides way more coverage on nights in the mountains and is durable, having been in my gear on a half dozen climbs with nary a scratch.

Druff should unban you just to piss off jsearles, who has cucked him harder than anyone but Druff himself.ovwr the last year.

A side note- I current live out in the country right now and sometimes my home gets blacked out. Or I have to do some extensive yard work in the evening. Earlier this year, I found this USB rechargeable Nebo folding work light, its pretty awesome.
