Lakers talking about bringing back Gasol.... Pau Gasol, that is

The Lakers already brought Marc Gasol to their squad on November 24.

Now the Lakers are discussing bringing back older brother Pau, a former Laker, who last played NBA basketball almost 2 years ago, in March 2019.

Pau is 40 1/2 years old, and will be near 41 by the time the season ends. Interestingly, Marc seems more concerned about his brother's health than the chance to finally play together:

I can't imagine that Pau, at age 40 and coming back from a long injury, could be effective anymore. I realize he'd only be a backup, but this seems more like a gimmick than anything else. Do the Lakers really need this?

When you sign Lebron +Davis to massive contracts you need to have some people at league minimum.

He would likely play 10 minutes a game or less. Fairly versatile as a center to help space the floor for Davis or Lebron.

Lakers are thin at Center right now. You have Marc Gasol and then you can have Davis/Lebron there, is there anyone else?

Supposedly they are going to give Giannis' younger brother a shot, especially if Pau is a fail.

The truth is it's really, really, really hard to be effective in the NBA after 40.

That's why I laughed at that idiotic Steve Nash contract awhile back. Nash was great in his prime. Old Man Nash was not so great, and the contract being set to end at age 41 had fail written all over it. Sure enough...

I realize that older centers can sometimes last longer, as quickness and agility aren't as important. It's the same reason that pitchers in MLB can sometimes go awhile after 40, whereas position players usually can't. Still in the NBA it's just too physical for a player over 40 to have a chance.

I will say that Pau isn't expected to be a major piece of the team, nor is he going to start, so this isn't the same as the laughable Nash situation. Still, it just kinda feels like a combination of a gimmick and nostalgia, and it happens to fill a position where they're thin.

They called Andrew Bynum first but he tore his ACL walking to the phone.
