New Tech, Cameras recording License Plates on City Streets, Privacy Invasion?

Local town has installed cameras all over their city streets recording and recognizing all license plates with police notified any any cars stolen, having people with active warrants etc.

Invasion of privacy or not? They say only cars with issues are being reported to the police. Let’s say there is a robbery and murder in the area, wouldn’t that then cause all cars driving through at that time to be suspect to questioning?
I say these won’t last long.

    Nice try Nazis.

What town? That's sounds like law enforcement territory and they got no money, especially now.
Can't hand it over to the private sector, oh wait, yes you can.

Cops don't need this anyway they simply pull the black guy over

It’s actually a very wealthy city, Hunting Valley. The cams are scanners with direct report to police. The criminals are one thing, ordinary joe is another.

Apparently they are called Automated License Plate Readers, from EFF website,

Automated license plate readers (ALPRs) are high-speed, computer-controlled camera systems that are typically mounted on street poles, streetlights, highway overpasses, mobile trailers, or attached to police squad cars. ALPRs automatically capture all license plate numbers that come into view, along with the location, date, and time. The data, which includes photographs of the vehicle and sometimes its driver and passengers, is then uploaded to a central server.

Vendors say that the information collected can be used by police to find out where a plate has been in the past, to determine whether a vehicle was at the scene of a crime, to identify travel patterns, and even to discover vehicles that may be associated with each other. Law enforcement agencies can choose to share their information with thousands of other agencies.

Taken in the aggregate, ALPR data can paint an intimate portrait of a driver’s life and even chill First Amendment protected activity. ALPR technology can be used to target drivers who visit sensitive places such as health centers, immigration clinics, gun shops, union halls, protests, or centers of religious worship.

Drivers have no control over whether their vehicle displays a license plate because the government requires all car, truck, and motorcycle drivers to display license plates in public view. So it’s particularly disturbing that automatic license plate readers are used to track and record the movements of millions of ordinary people, even though the overwhelming majority are not connected to a crime.

Hunting Valley has installed them on all city streets.

This is why we need strong and transparent civilian oversight of the police.

I share splits outrage. Just wait for full blown 5G. Nothing you can do.

We are old enough to give any shits about privacy. Kids today surrendered that issue at birth. They are just being practical I suppose. There is nothing you can do now.

There is no oversight or rules that are going to protect your rights. Once the data is collected it’s too late.

Hate to tell you, but it is likely this directive is coming above the police.

As bad as these cameras are, the traffic cameras (both speeding and red light) are worse. It's all about money.

I realize that. And while that's annoying, the traffic cameras for money bullshit concerns me less than the erosion of civil liberties and privacy.

LEOs in MN have had these installed on their squads for years here. Not new tech, just new application by installing stationary readers. Slope is slippery. Long story short, don't break the law, or bum a ride in a stolen whip with your meth dealer and you should dodge bullets.

You should not expect privacy while in public .
You are being filmed at many public and private properties.
Courts have ruled police running liscense plates is not an infraction of civil liberties.
Yes , traffic cameras are all about money, this effort sounds more like an effort to solve crimes and protect the public.

I heard the only reason cars have license plates is so the government can track you.
