Outside of his brother everyone in the Van Halen band hated Eddie. Sammie Hagar would talk about the jet flights they would take to concerts and Eddie's teeth were rotting out due to drugs and wine abuse. He would literally drink three bottles of red wine on a flight.

What killed Eddie was smoking, same with Patrick Swayze. Eddie lost most of his tongue a few years ago. True story I saw him at a restaurant like 10 years ago in LA. He was with a group of people and I noticed he was drinking water, he apparently had been sober for quite a while. He looked normal.

Literally this was the most overrated band in history. It's more nostalgia than anything else, in the long term Def Leopard will be more fondly remembered, as will Nickleback.

I actually liked their "1984" album the best of all their work... and then David Lee Roth left, and it was never the same.

    Sad!

But yeah, my first thought was that this guy didn't live a healthy lifestyle, so I have to imagine the early throat cancer wasn't just bad luck.

The early celebrity deaths which freak me out more involve the ones who didn't contribute to it. Like Luke Perry's death actually spurred me to finally get my blood pressure under control. I had tried for the prior 5 years but wasn't able to get it right. I got more aggressive about trying other med combos, and finally found one that worked.

Some friends argue that Van Hagar is superior to Van Halen....they are nuts.

Saw them in 1979. They opened for Black Sabbath and blew them off the stage.

It was hilarious when David Lee Roth had his show on Sirius. It was a talk show, it was so bad they paid him 3 years salary after a few months just to end it.

As far as Van Halen, most of the top 10 hits were from Sammy Hagar. In fact outside of Jump they all were awful, maybe a couple of rip offs in the late 70s were ok. I mean did anyone listen to "Hot for Teacher" from 1984? It was terrible. Same with "Panama".

Most of the listenable songs from Van Halen were from the Hagar era.

I am sure this is anecdotal, but I have never read a positive story about Eddie Van Halen. Nobody liked the guy from everything I read. By all accounts he died sober though, looks like he beat booze/drugs at the end.

I think the way to go out as a rock star is like David Bowie where everyone liked you. When Clapton goes, he will go down as a huge redemption project.

    RIP.

hes one of those talents who has to be viewed in the context of what other people were doing to appreciate. like a lot of people were doing hammer-ons in the 80s but no one who heard evh do hammer-ons came away from the experience without realizing they werent very good at it by comparison.

but if we are being totally honest, his lifestyle, his personality, and his music didnt age very well. but yeah VH circa like '83... that was some real shit.

By the way, the high school exterior is Marshall High School in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles. In 1984, when this came out, MTV was king. Everyone saw this video multiple times a week. The tune was fun and rocking, and the guys ultimately poked fun at themselves. But you always walked away thinking that Eddie was a virtuoso.

I get that some of you cats like to be contrarian, but regardless of your dumb shit trolly opinions Eddie Van Halen was GOD. I would put him on the same level of Hendrix in the amount of kids he inspired to pick up a guitar. Eruption is a standard at this point & mandatory to learn if you want to play shred guitar

1984 was good, but most VH purists would say their early albums were better.
