I also don't understand why you order online/"custom built" laptops, just go to a store and buy one, there's nothing special about what you're getting, get 16 gigs of ram, 2tb solid state HD, and fucking windows 10, you act like you're gaming or editing video, as long as you have stereo mix why are you "custom building" a laptop from hp of all places. to save a hundred bucks?
If you walk into Best Buy and get a laptop, you're still dealing with HP for a lot of support issues, and they're far less wiling to do anything for you at the middle management level because you bought it third party.

If I were to ask, "Does this laptop have stereo mix?" at the store, I would get blank looks from everyone, as I would if I brought it back to complain it was missing.

Basically all you're gaining from buying it at a store is speed. In the case of initial hardware issues like my rattling touchpad, that's an easier fix. In the case of any warranty or software issues like this stereo mix thing, you're actually at a disadvantage.

Also it tends to be a little more expensive, and you're sometimes paying for shit you don't need or want. Also there aren't all that many ready-to-buy 17 inch options which meet my requirements.
No, I don't even buy the Best Buy scenario. Most outlets now prefer that you make an online purchase and pick it up at their location. So your requirements, the one's you stipulated online,
would be no different. It would still be you picking the specs but with a different delivery location. The cost of you picking that purchase up is probably equal to or less than the
cost of time lost and frustration by dealing directly online.

    Druff did you do this?

“ Settings/Privacy/App authorization/Microphone, you have to check 'Allow Apps to use microphone'.”

Reading more looks like more or less Microsoft is attempting to get rid of Stereo Mix because of copyright issues. So looks like something above might be best long-term solution or buy a Mac.

I tried that shit with things like Virtual Audio Cable years ago, and it sucked. Useless for radio because it had a delay.

I don't think it's a Microsoft thing. I'm running the same version of Windows on my old computer, and it has it.

I've heard this "they're getting rid of stereo mix because of copyright issues" for 10 years now, but it continues to exist. It just gets harder and harder to find or activate.

Supposedly HP's escalation team is calling me Monday. If they do, I will demand free help from their LOL Smart Friends team to get it working.

If all else fails with Stereo Mix, I can always by an external audio card. In fact, I have an old one lying around from like 10 years ago which I can try. I know it works on this computer, though it comes out a bit soft. I think I can fix that with the amplifier I use for radio anyway.

Still, kinda sucks to buy a new computer and having to mess with external audio cards for radio, so I'm really hoping to avoid this. It's possible there's a trick that HP knows to fix this.

Yes I did this already. Didn't help. Stereo Mix simply isn't there.

Yea Microsoft removed it from the required spec, so basically manufacturer has to specifically ask for it when building drivers. Which means extra money and extra support.

There is of course the other logical solution, which is to use two computers. One to do radio and take calls and one to capture sound (basically turn one into a soundboard). Which is how every major podcast more or less works. Computer -> Soundboard -> Capture Device (Computer)

Also if you could figure out how to get Audicity to send to the server it has a Skype plugin and custom no latency solution.

Huge pain in the ass to do this, especially as a solo host with no staff.

Honestly I'd rather use a 2010 external Soundblaster card than do this.

I guess it's possible that Stereo Mix has simply been eliminated from the HP Realtek drivers, which would suck. But I've seen no indication either way whether or not it's true.

I'm guessing this has been hashed out many times before me by upper levels of HP support. Just gotta reach a non-monkey to give me the actual answer.

Look cheapie, who do you think you're talking to? Are you telling me there are no
computer tech/sales guys around you? They're probably a dime a dozen.

Point is you don't have to argue with some off shore rep as a minion.
A serious customer of a manufacturer holds much more weight than you do.
    One call fixes all

When you accept the lowest internet price you reject the services that an IT
    specialist or local retailer provides
You have no clue what you're saying.

I am an IT guy. I don't need a "computer/tech sales guy", nor could one help me even if I did.

This problem either has no fix, or it's something an HP support rep has a special driver or registry setting to do.

You're framing this like it happened because I got a "low internet price", but in reality you don't understand any of this, nor are you technical yourself.

I got a new HP laptop myself back in March and its been great. It has a core i5-8265U processor (8th gen) @1.8ghz., 8gb of RAM, 64 bit, Win 10

Its great for what I use it for, its perfect. I think it was $800 after tax and all, not one hiccup yet so I hope it all works out for you, but im sure I probably do less and need less 'computer' wise then you do of course. Anyway just figured i'd throw that at you, and for me its been a great laptop im happy.

I've tried explaining to him how to do a mix minus (with a mixer)so he doesn't sound like shit to his Co hosts and there's literally zero chance of an echo occurring because of the mix minus.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure using OBS to run radio would eliminate the need for stereo mix or an external mixer entirely.

I'm not sure, I've used obs for streaming with multiple mics and audio inputs, but I've never had like, say a Skype conversation going, I'm not quite sure it would mix out the co hosts or callers audio, meaning it would send all audio back to them thus the dreaded echo, but for all I know you could mix minus them out of the return feed and eliminate the echo, you may be right

I should have added Voicemeeter. Voicemeeter and OBS would completely remove the need for stereo mix, I'm almost certain.

All software solutions I've tried to this in the past (aside from tweaks to get Stereo Mix to show up) have been a FAIL.

They have either failed to mix properly with Skype, or there's a delay, or there's an echo.

    To answer the other questions:

"Why don't you just get an external mixer?"

Because it's cumbersome and a pain in the ass. However, I will do it if that's the only option.

"Why don't you care if your co-hosts can't hear you well?"

They can hear me well. The sounding bad to the co-hosts problem was one episode before I figured out a setting I had changed earlier in the week. I changed it back, and I sounded fine to them once again. The only problem involves Skype sometimes preventing co-hosts from hearing sound effects. This isn't a huge deal -- and I fix it in editing when it happens -- but this is one thing which an external mixer would indeed fix.

With all of that said, if anyone here has actually used a software solution to stereo mix, which has been tested on Skype to have no delay, no echo, and full ability for the other side to hear your computer sounds (like YouTube), let me know.

You are one unique dude. There many thousands of podcasts and internet based talk shows.

Why do we not hear a collective scream from these poor souls who must endure the weak technology of 2020?

I'll bet it's because the majority aren't cheap fucks

The build quality on consumer grade laptops is basically universally terrible. You're better off getting an off lease Latitude/ThinkPad/EliteBook and cleaning it up 95% of the time.
