Is everybody writing a book about UB/Absolute Poker?

    http://www.pokernews.com/news/2012/0...oker-13240.htm
Busting Vegas Author Ben Mezrich's New Book to Tell Story of UB/Absolute Poker Founding

Recently on CNBC's Squawk Box, author Ben Mezrich revealed the focus of his new project. Mezrich, author of Busting Vegas: The MIT Whiz Kid Who Brought the Casinos to Their Knees and The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius, and Betrayal, both of which were turned into movies, is currently working on a book about online poker.

When asked what he was working on, Mezrich said, "I'm working on a big new book for next summer about a bunch of college kids who launched the online poker world out of a dorm room essentially. They're brilliant kids who built an empire in a way, and now they're being persecuted, in hiding in Antigua, because they did something to me that was very American. It's an intersection of 21 and The Social Network."

    Are you fucking kidding me?

I expect Ben Mezrich to cover everything except what really happened and what the fuck happened to my money.

I think all the projects are late to the UB cheating mess. Haley had the inside track on the story due to her volunteering to pull the info together and report out, only to slow roll the poker world with the info she had received and then deciding to write her own book for personal gain. The bottom line is the UB story was YEARS ago, poker has lost a huge head of steam with the main stream, black friday occurred and except for the die hard poker audience these project will only appeal to a very small audience. I'd bet Haley's book sell's less than 3,000 copies or downloads.

It's definitely not relevant anymore, but Mezrich can tell a story and sell books! I actually think Haley would benefit by publishing just after the public interest was piqued by the Mezrich book, which will likely be somewhat loose on the facts. Sort of like all those Knights Templar books did after the Da Vinci Code. Trying to sell them in any other point in the last 100 years would have led to 10 copies sold, but after the Da Vinci anything Templar was hot for publishing houses
I write things about poker at my Poker Blog and elsewhere on the Internets

I agree that Mezrich can probably write a good story and sell books, but I'm afraid that, from the description, it might "humanize" the AP cheaters and make them look like sympathetic characters.

That would really be too bad.

It's not the same as his book about card counters, who are not bad people, but are rather just beating casinos at their own game.

The AP frat boys were a bunch of cheating scumbags.

This is really weird! Someone predicted this 5 years ago, with surprising accuracy!

Note that the October, 2007 date of the post is just around the time the AP scandal was gaining steam.

Also, supposedly someone e-mailed Mezrich and he is now reading the 2+2 thread.

Not sure if that will change his mind.

ElevenGrover provided this comical take on what the book might be about:

Rich college graduates band together and create the online poker boom. Gumball rallies, giant parties, american beauty money shots as they dodge early challenges from low rent mobster thugs, private jet crashes, crazy biker mohawk hosting companies and jurisdictional hazard. In between, everyone flies off to Paris for a lovely ($$$$) wedding.

But the villainous USGov is lurking with processor seizures, forcing golf ball transactions and co-opting entire banks to evade transaction coding. (Need a Larry Fishburne type here too). BF arrives, freezing up all deposits and leaving our heros with no choice but to lam it places with palm trees and weak tax treaties. Its got action, young guys chasing supermodel tail and an anti-authoritarian, live free or... live Jimmy Buffett style with what they escape with. Movie... errrr... screenplay... errrr NYT bestseller monetizing vehicle closes with all four saving Central America with charitable work and hands on giving back to the world.

Players, holecard cheating, investor defrauding and the real amounts socked away in a Panamanian safety deposit box company barely figure in. It's all collateral damage in Uncle Sam's vicious war on two college kids with matching BMWs.

Scratch that. Probably make a Russ Hamilton composite out of old school vegas and have that character found out by the mysterious AJ Green as absconding with significant loot before the Greeks figure out what hit them. When they threaten him, he calls his Detroit mafia buddies and the fellas are threatened in Aruba with becoming Natalie Holloway's roommates. In the end, composite Russ actually gets IRSd, leaving no loose ends.

This non-fiction stuff is pretty easy if you put your mind to it...
