There are not 390 users browsing this forum

Ever wonder why at times the readership of this forum
seems high when the board seems static?

I noticed if I am not logged in and refresh a few pages
in succession the "browsers using this forum" total increases
    steadily

Stuff you should not care about

I may be off, but I think it's something like a running count of unique visitors in the last 24 hours, including things like web crawlers and spiders, which run up the count a good bit sometimes.

I thought the same but after I noticed the uptick with little forum activity
I put it to the test. In under ten minutes I raised the "guest" total significantly.

Not quite one to but it would take a big coincidence for the number to rise
so quickly, while I was purposely refreshing.

no... it doesn't work like that.

it's a new snapshot whenever you refresh.

looked at the users and location.

most guests are in poker related threads. so some event or name in that forum is trending

Yeah that is simply wrong. On a given day the number of viewers in the
secondary forums is a fraction of what Flying Stupidity gets.

If you look at those less populated forums you'll often find the
on-line members make up a great majority of the viewers.

FS always has a large number of guests which seems to correspond with
    how often pages are refreshed

I know you live a pathetic life in solitude but SOME OF US HAVE GUESTS and Dan Druff is watching and counting them.

IMO, Limitles is pretty much correct on his assessment.

    I've witnessed the same thing.

In fact, I'm pretty sure I even remember either Donkdown or NWP having the same thing; I cant remember which site for sure, but I think it might have been Donkdown.

I even remember in the distant past watching very closely at times, and certain posters ( e.g. Jewdonk) would manipulate this feature to make it look like some of his threads had "tons more viewers" than they really did. I even seem to remember him making a comment about it at some point. (Again, I cant remember if it was here or DD)

I'm not a computer nerd or anything in that ballpark, so I have no idea why this happens - except I will wager that this setting can be adjusted by the admin.

On that note, I even remember years ago when I was closely watching this manipulation, all of the sudden something changed and the numbers were back to "normal" ( or whatever that means), and then after a while something must have been switched back and it was off to the races again.

That, glitches, software assuming that users with somewhat random IP addresses are unique hits and likely handful of other things i can't think of.

Basically internet assumes i'm in 7-11 different places when ever i log in to where ever with a new device or same device after logging out. I doubt i'm the only one seeing this. I assume it's thing with most people without a fixed IP address and it's most visible when you're not logged in when your IP address is prioritized over your log in info.

    It's a combination of:

    - Lurkers
    - Bots/spiders
    - Changing IPs of non-logged-in users, such as cell phones not using Wifi
    - There is a setting for how long someone is considered "logged in" before it doesn't count them anymore

Rule of thumb: This forum gets more readers than you think, but fewer than it says.

Fine, that's basically bullshit. How this site is drawing many hundreds of views at every hour has to a new wonder of the world.

Sure you'll drag in some random lost souls
every once in a while but really what's to see?

And no one has addressed my little refreshing
experiment where I influenced the view total
    significantly within minutes.

So new refreshes are counted but not the drop offs?
Just get rid of it. It's false.
