Interestingly, that is hotter than the highest recorded temperature in Vegas, which was "only" 117 (but has been tied several times).
Today it's 114 in Woodland Hills, CA (the San Fernando Valley, which is mostly LA city), and the projected high is 116. However, since we have about 2-3 hours until the high temperature hits, 119 or 120 degrees is not out of the question.
It is 103 degrees where I am, which is also unusual. I live in a cooler area of southern CA, and we rarely break 100 degrees, while freezing temperatures at night in the winter typically happen multiple times.
My girlfriend's mom's A/C broke today, so she is over here right now.
This occurring in early Septmeber is NOT unexpected, though. The hottest average temperature in Los Angeles typically occurs between August 25 and September 10.
This heat was part of the reason I placed an OVER bet on the Angels game yesterday, where there were two bad pitchers going. Despite being a 7-inning game, there were 19 runs scored.
