Real video of an 8-minute drive on Los Angeles streets/freeways in March 1988

The date of this video (March 27, 1988) is especially meaningful to me because it was recorded just days after I got my driver's license.

While I didn't take this video, this is what it looked like when I drove around the city at that time.

Amazing how much different it looks now. It's easy to picture 1988 as being a bit more modern-looking than this.

You even get a selection of 1980s Los Angeles radio (Power 106 and KOST 103, among others) during the drive.

This is the first song you hear on the radio in the video:

I had forgotten about this song, but you couldn't enter a club in the late '80s without hearing it.

Had a huge crush on the leadsinger until my older brothrr and his friends teased the shit out of me by saying she was a dide in a wig and my liking her was propf that i was gay. They called her the "space fag" because of how she looked and for months would ask when the spsce fag was going to beam me up to his fag planet so that we going to get married. Assholes!

They Live was released in 1988. it's a good view of LA before all the new skyscrapers (which you see the main character working on as a construction worker)

For whatever reason the LA drive reminds me of E.T the movie.

Cool vid even if the videographer needs to be waterboarded for such sloppy work. Because I can think of a few contests to run based on it:

    1) Identify as many songs (with timestamp) in it as you can. Verify your claims by also posting a music vid or link to an audio recording of said songs.

    2) Identify the make and model of vehicles visible in the video. Inclde timestamp, pic from the Internet, and a link to the confirmable source.

    3) Map out the likely route the female driver in the vid took. Supply screenshot of candidate route using a mapping app/site showing the route.

    4) Describe in graphic detail how you would do that foxy short-haired Latina MILF who drove the car. Extra points for spoilered pics grabbed off of the internet (or your personal appearances in pro or amateur porn flicks or galleries, published or otherwise) illustrating how you do that hot-even-if-older mamacita.

I don't blame the videographer for anything.

He was using a clunky camcorder in 1988 to do this, and seemed to do this on a whim when with his mom driving between two places.

He was also likely pretty young at the time.

Props to him for saving this for 28 years.

The driver said on his YouTube channel that this route was from Covina, CA (a suburb east of Los Angeles) to Los Angeles. The freeway you saw was the 10 freeway.

One interesting thing about this 1988 freeway video is that you see a lot of 1970s cars on the road, which makes sense. It's the same reason you see 2000s cars on the road now. However, when you think "1988", you picture new vehicles from 1988 being on the road, but that's not the correct way to picture it. In fact, I was driving a 1976 vehicle in 1988.

It's surprising to see the traffic so light especially after the car gets east of the junctions with the Pomona, Golden State and Santa Ana freeways.

MumblesBadly: I thought the same thing. Was just bopping about with a few weeks ago in my rig and the traffic was muuuuuuch busier!

What??? I thought all amateur videographers back then put out a grand or more for a Steadicam? Heck! Here's an old pic of me back then in my usual on-the-whim video-taking gear.

(Actually, I paid an actor to stand in for me in this shot. I'm a little camera shy.)

Actually, after being thoroughly frustrated trying to find where in Covina they got onto I-10 (using Google Maps and Google Earth), I checked the comment section of the YouTube vid and learned this:

    Name: image.jpeg

Well, that changed everything! And made total sense given how you can see the San Gabriel Mountains in the background, and the only places in/near Covina where you would see them when approaching I-10 didn't match at all an eyeballing of street orientations.

Plus, the vid shows them passing the following streets on the way to I-10 (with the mountains in the background):

    30th:

Size: 850.4 KB

    Followed by Adams:

Size: 973.7 KB

    And then 23rd:

    Name: image.png
Views: 175
Size: 784.3 KB

Then following a cut, they turn right to jump on I-10 East.

    Name: image.png
Views: 165
Size: 870.8 KB

So, they were definitely going north in the beginning of their trip to get to I-10. But on which street?...

So, here's the challenge if you want to play along: Be the first to identify that street, and provide proof supporting your claim. Because I've figured it out and will give you all time to show your private dick skills. (At least when it comes to identifying a locale. What you do with your dick, if you have one, is your own business.)

Alrighty then! Challenge is on! May the best private dick win!

I assume they are getting on the freeway at Central as the next ramp is Santa Fe. I don't know if that is the street they are driving north on though. If it is times have changed. That area of LA basically looks like you are driving through Tijuana now.

There are definitely things visible in the video that are still around. Keep trying.
