Before reading the article, I wondered how a fat, ugly, non-passable trans like Mischa Haider would be able to con this professor.
Turned out Haider was the trans accomplice meant to help guilt idiot white liberal men into not taking counter-action. The leader of the scam was Maria Pia Shuman, who had sex with Bruce Hay, then embroiled him in a nasty paternity scam.
Here's a good example of why they targeted Hay:
Zacks [Hay's ex-wife, with whom he still had some kind of relationship] pushed Hay to ask for a paternity test [for the alleged baby with Shuman], but Hay wouldn’t have it. Not only did he trust Shuman, he felt it would have been insulting for a heterosexual cisgender man to question a professed lesbian as to whether she’d had sex with other men. He believed her when she said her sexual relationship with him was an exception.
Haider and Shuman also badly abused the Title IX anti-sexual-harassment complaint procedure at Harvard, getting him suspended. Even worse, he's still not unsuspended despite the obvious evidence that this entire thing was a con.
Toward the end of the article, it mentions that Hay got an anonymous text message, presumably from Hay or Haider, claiming that this havoc was wreaked upon him because they "hate the patriarchy, that's all".

This entire article is basically a huge indictment of the flaws in woke leftist thinking, but I don't think the author realizes it.
White male "privilege" guilt making Hay afraid to question "a lesbian" as to her questionable paternity story: CHECK
Trans woman guilt tripping woke white victim that he's stressing her out and making her depressed, and it working like a charm: CHECK
Title IX being abused by crazy/evil people to torture innocent victims at colleges, and due process being so absent that this tactic can be highly successful: CHECK
Herein lies the flaws with a belief system which relies upon identity politics. If you give more credit or leeway to someone because they're in a supposed "victim" class -- and if you have a hard time imagining that people in those victim classes can be evil and take advantage of such leeway -- then you're a gullible moron.
Throughout this entire ordeal, Hay realized that he was a privileged heterosexual white male, and was desperately trying to see good in the (supposed) lesbian and trans woman who were clearly scamming him and enjoying wreaking havoc upon his life. It's so hard for leftists to accept when their own wokeness is being used against them.
Sad yet very illuminating story.
BTW, if you read the follow up article I posted above, it really appears that the motivation here was less financial and more pure evil. Shuman -- from a rich family -- appears to just enjoy ruining the lives of "WASPy Boston men", simply as some sort of sick power trip. She also was never a lesbian. The lesbian thing is an act meant to ensnare woke idiots who will give her more credit because she's part of a victim class (plus it helps with her claim that she doesn't sleep around with men).
Oh, and while the story is a year old (and the events in the story mostly took place from 2015-18), there is a very recent development.
Maria Pia Shuman, who now claims that Mischa Haider is her romantic partner, is now suing the NY Post or defamation.

This feels real. The women involved are educated enough to make something feel real, but I’d bet on it being him.
If their motivation was truly that they hated this sort of man, logic dictates they are mentally ill and it’s entirely possible as the Shuman got involved with these men, she may have not felt the same about each one of them. That she may have hated one less than the other. She would have to be a seriously mentally ill girl, on one level attracted to what she hates, which isn’t really that abnormal. The lengths they go are what’s abnormal. We have a world of women constantly attracted to men they loathe on some level, so that isn’t rare .
The writer did gloss over the fact it was pretty clear to me that the guy was in love with this girl and was a constant liar to his ex wife/wife. Even as she was embroiled in defending him, she’d leave town and he’d have them over to stay. It was amazing how far she went to defend him. I wouldn’t doubt she crafted the most gullible man image. It feels like something her and the journalist would settle on.
Clearly these two women are fucked up, but he’s fucked up too. That’s usually how you get yourself into these spots. Their motivation is bizarre. These aren’t things likely to get you paid. They really set out more to destroy the type of man they hate. Like you understand how the victim got hooked, don’t feel sorry for him, but you have to squint to not see he continued to let it happen because it brought him something.
Funny googling the story and the individuals, of all people, Ross Douhat wrote a small blurb on the article. It wasn’t really insightful beyond he described my reaction and basically your reaction stone cold dead on. I laughed and said to myself he certainly has the reaction of the left and right to the story dead on.

I think it's also possible that this is a story where everyone is fucked up to some degree -- including the author.
In the lawsuit, the two women allege that the story's author (Kera Bolonik, a lesbian herself) locked straight onto one narrative -- that they two women were evil personified, and victimized hapless/gullible Bruce Hay. They claim that Bolonik selectively interviewed only those likely to go along with that viewpoint, and would browbeat others into supporting her narrative.
What strikes me as most suspicious is that the women swear the $3,000 check -- the one alleged to be a vacation expense reimbursement, but later was an important tool to function as a security deposit for the "stolen" home -- had a memo reading "RENT".
Shuman and Haider claim that the most sensation claim made in the story -- that they conned Bruce Hay into giving his computer passwords so they could impersonate him, draw up a fake rental agreement, and force him out of his home -- was simply untrue. They claim that Bolonik refused to look at evidence which would exonerate them here.
This is the one part of the story I never quite understood.
Was it really possible to take over a $3.2 million home by simply forging a rental agreement and getting the owner to cash a $3,000 check from you? How did the women get the keys? How did they remove all the furniture Ferris Bueller style, without anyone noticing?
And if this were a case of a true forgery, why was it seemingly a civil matter rather than a criminal one?
Given Hay's ever-switching loyalties (he's back to defending Shuman and Haider in the present lawsuit, not to mention fucking over his ex-wife), it wouldn't be surprising if some of his story was bullshit.
That is, he might have willingly rented them that expensive home for a laughable $1500/month, only to later claim it was a big con, in order to pacify his angry ex-wife.
Of course, Haider and Shuman were clearly very shady themselves, and I believe they conned multiple men. But the house-napping part of the story might be inaccurate, hence the women believing they have a viable lawsuit.
I also never quite understood Hay's relationship with the tranns woman Hader. It was portrayed in the article that it was nothing more than a close friendship at its peak, but I'm suspecting it might have been more than that. That weird blog on Medium alleges that a video exists of Hay essentially admitting that he ejaculated on Hader "after promising not to", where he offers to wash her clothes. While ejaculating on someone during other sexual activity isn't really sexual assault, if this story about the video is true, it would indicate that Hay was engaging in some LLL-style trans loving.
It may actually be the case that he was so easily duped because he was excited about a three-way relationship between him, a woman, and a trans woman, with them all co-parenting their clan of kids together. Could you think of anything more woke? It's possible this made him extremely willing to do anything to keep them happy, even when it became fairly obvious he was being conned.
Perhaps when he finally came to realize this, he was a combination of angry and embarrassed, so he cleaned up the story somewhat to make it simpler, and to make himself look better.
Aside from Hay's long-suffering ex-wife, there aren't really any sympathetic characters in this story.
Imo Haider is controlling both Hay and Maria-Pia Shuman. She's a stone-cold sociopathic con-bitch genius.
Haider pimps Shuman, and she apparently does it often. For high stakes- blackmail. Then she takes Shuman home and forces her to play wife.
No way they are partners. The french girl is as owned as Hay.
