Dodgers catch a break

Major League Baseball announced Wednesday that Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera has been suspended 50 games without pay after testing positive for Testosterone, a performance-enhancing substance.
Cabrera has had an MVP-caliber season, hitting .346 with 11 homers and 60 RBIs. He was named the MVP of the All-Star Game and has started 110 of the Giants’ 117 games. Cabrera’s career took a downturn in 2010, when he hit just .255 with four homers. He bounced back in 2011 with 201 hits and 18 homers.
Approached by CSN Bay Area shortly after the All-Star break, Cabrera forcefully denied rumors that he had failed a test. The Giants team leaders denied the rumors as well.
Cabrera was listed as the left fielder this morning, but manager Bruce Bochy called the media into his office about a half-hour earlier than normal. There was no mention of Cabrera’s impending suspension. The clubhouse was soon closed.
Cabrera is the second Giant to fail a test this season. Relief pitcher Guillermo Mota was suspended for 100 games earlier this season but is expected back in September.
Cabrera won’t be back anytime soon. The suspension is for 50 games and the Giants have just 45 games left in the regular season. The suspension is effective immediately.
