I was shocked to see how much SiriusXM paid for him in the latest contract.
The article desertrunner linked said that only "single digit percent" people subscribe primarily because of him. I'm surprised it's even that high.
Sirius may have needed him at the beginning to put themselves on the map, but in 2021 terrestrial radio has been in a long decline, and anyone who wants satellite radio gets it. Most are tuning in for the music or the variety -- not specifically for Stern. Back in 2004, when I got my BMW 5-series, I had to pay extra money to get SiriusXM installed in the car. Nowadays it comes standard in most vehicles.
1990s Howard was fun, edgy, and cool -- even when he made missteps like his 1994 New Years Pageant.
Now he's just become one of the spoiled, rich, liberal Hollywood elite, yet at the same time still maintains the unpleasant and bitter demeanor. It's like the worst of both worlds. 1990s Howard was bitter, but that also gave him edge and made him cool. Nowadays he's bitter but doesn't want to step on the wrong toes, or say anything too edgy. It's like dating a woman in her 50s who is also immature -- why bother?

I have Sirius XM and really don't listen to him. His act grew stale 10 years ago. Next.
So, I finally quit my Sirius/XM subscription a week ago. The show has been horribad since Covid. Stern puts no effort into it. He is still broadcasting from his basement in the Hamptons, acting like Covid is still a big threat. He is totally woke and dull. He has no daily life experience now and no coworkers to interact with, and they stopped doing the news years ago, so he has NOTHING TO TALK ABOUT. Also, his dumb 50 year-old former Sears catalogue model wife comes on the show way too much. And Ralph Cirella died recently, and Robin doesn't seem to be doing too well, health-wise. It's really too bad when someone, like Howard, who was great at something at one point becomes worse than mediocre and won't admit it.

Yeah Stern just isn't the same guy anymore, as I said earlier in the thread.
I think the political stuff is what bothers me the most. Go look at classic '80s/'90s stern. He sometimes had opinions about social/political matters, but he never was a stooge for either party. He took the position of the "offensive guy with common sense who speaks his mind", rather than parroting any political narrative.
This also led to a lot of remarks stereotyping blacks, gays, Arabs, Asians, and even Jews. But it was always done in a comedic fashion, and not from a bigoted standpoint. Indeed, the Daniel Carver segments were not meant to glorify Carver for his KKK white supremacist views, but to mock and make fun of him without him realizing it. Carver thought he was delivering a serious message to the people, and didn't realize he was simply treated as a clown everyone laughed at. It was beautiful.
That Howard is gone. He's afraid to be offensive, unless it's in the process of criticizing Republicans.
He's also just old and has lost energy. I think he'll be 70 in a few weeks. He now mostly counts on writers and just phones it in. I guess the money is too much to ignore, especially since he has kids and figures they'll be getting it.
Stern had the advantage of being the underdog in that war... until he wasn't anymore, and by that point he vaulted way past Imus to where he'd just kick him occasionally for fun.
Imus unfairly took a massive hit due to the "nappy headed hoes" remark regarding the Rutgers female basketball team. Stern said many more offensive lines about black people and black women, but somehow he got a pass because of the presence of Robin Quivers.
(On a side note, Robin was the one who best liked my parody of Daniel Carver's message, which was a good feeling, as it was clear the mocking tone of the whole thing landed the way I wanted it to.)
The Rutgers thing marked the end of a decades long run. Imus was a burnt out shell. Even I had moved on
I liked Imus’ conservative bent and sensibility. I thought his bits were funny.
I was getting laid pretty regularly so Stern’s boobs and penis jokes didn’t titillate me like it would others.
