Do you guys see anyone like Esfandiari or that other paragon of mental health, Negraneau, doing anything?

Most of these guys didn’t make it to the other side. We were so enthralled with the whole Poker lifestyle at one point. Woulda swapped lives in a heartbeat. Scary.
Well said. I definitely had thoughts/dreams of being a professional poker player at one point. I’m so lucky I didn’t have the drive/discipline/skill/luck to turn the dream into a reality. No question my life turned out for the better by a mile.

    100%.

Almost no examples of well adjusted, happy grinders in the long term.

Look at even someone like Negreanu now; guy has been in constant search for something since being in the spotlight and seems to have cracked now.

As a longtime grinder myself, I can comment on this.

I actually talked about it on my last radio show, but I'll say it again here.

A certain personality type is required in order to be a long term successful poker pro. This personality type requires a respect for money, no addictive personality, and an ability to realistically assess one's own strengths and weaknesses. If you lack these attributes -- most of which cannot be learned -- you will go bust, and maybe even run yourself into an early death.

These attributes ironically hinder you at the tables somewhat. It's hard to reach the highest levels and win the big money if you respect money too much. What's good about most of the top pros is also what's bad about most of the top pros.

Suffice to say, Brad Booth does not have these attributes, so his fate was sealed.

I do wonder how many big name pros would still have money if they didn't have sponsorships and/or backing deals.

Phil's longtime girlfriend is super duper rich, so.... that's not happening as long as he's with her.

    Or are currently bookmakers...

The # of people making a living from playing purely poker might be less than 5.

Here is a good article about the situation:

Here's a "more current" pic of Brad Booth than the one going around. Apparently his hair color has changed and he lost weight.

It's pretty obvious he is on the run, the whole camping charade is ridiculous. Unless you are a skilled camper you could not make it a week in the woods. Fuck, the mosquitoes in August would eat you alive.

My guess is he is hiding out in a small town and in some cheap motel, cash only. He can get by for a few months I suppose. Maybe do some odd jobs, but in the end he will get the itch and end up somewhere in Arizona playing small stakes.

LOL @ anyone on the the planet thinking he is sucking some canteen in a tent with bear spray in hand.

What's the line on him being donkdown? I'm not too familiar with the situation and barely read this thread, but dead has to be the favorite.

"He told his roommate that he was going camping. However, this roommate noted that Booth took only “minimal items that would not sustain him for more than a day or two.”"

That's the most worrying line in the article, imo.

This is never going to get any attention in the media because he's male. If he were a pretty white woman under 35, this would be all over the news.

Anyway, unfortunately this reminds me of the story of my childhood friend Mike.

I was good friends with Mike in elementary school, then we had a falling out, then we became friends again in high school, but lost touch after that. Sometime after high school, Mike started suffering from crushing depression (which is a common time for hereditary depression to begin), and he just never got control of it.

Mike also loved camping, and especially loved Yosemite. He was a very experienced hiker and camper by his late 20s, but still had major depression issues. He went to the Bay Area to visit his sister, apparently had a good 4th off July weekend with her, where everything seemed better than ever. It was all an act, just to give his beloved sister a nice final memory of him. Mike then left to "go camping" by himself at Yosemite. In reality, he used his knowledge of Yosemite to hike to an extremely remote area, and took a bunch of pills to commit suicide. While nobody knows for sure, it appears that Mike's desire was to become part of the place he loved most, and that's what he did. Nobody found his remains for 10 months, and by then, animals had disturbed the scene, and there was very little left.

Anyway, when I heard that Booth "left to go camping" and was never seen again, I thought of Mike.

It is implausible to think this guy is at some Koa Campsite. He already admitted he has essentially never left a casino for 20 years, now all of a sudden he is a camping expert? Who believes this shit? Going camping? This is like a fat guy saying he is going to run a marathon. Do you know how hard it is to put up a tent, and this guy is going to do it by himself? And what is he going to do for food, just kill some deer? What a fucking joke.

Don't worry, he's just out sucking dick for money. As soon as he makes enough to buy back in he'll reappear. Unless he got murdered like that Chinese lady who was doing the same thing.

What a strange thing to say. No media attention? A person takes off and hasn't checked in for a week or two? No story. It may garner a line or two in a local rag but there is no indication of foul play to this point so it does not constitute a story.

It's probably more likely that men pull a disappearing act more often
than women so there may be a slight bias to reporting a missing woman
but this under 35 good looking argument is weird.

Realize that no one has this thought before you. It's not even an issue
in this story but you chose bring it up. Very strange.

He looks like shit now, which strangely is the only reason I’m not sure he’s dead. Feels like meth or drugs is a possibility. Most people aren’t going to let their family worry for this long. That suggests dead.

I doubt he has enough money for some six week meth filed absence without needing to hit someone up for cash and word would get around.

I assumed he’d resurface when this first came up, as he’s been in a hole a long time and hasn’t offed himself yet, and for all his issues, most poker players convince themselves they’re one good score away from getting their life back. This length of time though, it looks bad. Live poker is dead and likely to be for a long while. Playing with nothing but grinders in partitioned off short handed tables might have done him in. I can’t imagine the fish are showing, and grinding low stakes in that environment for an indefinite period might have pushed him over the edge. Dude never had a job. Three hour wait lists to play 2/5 with other grinders or flip burgers at 43, yeah that could do it.

Really? From that picture I'm saying ok. Guy was a stud to start with

    but it doesn't get better

Look in the mirror and post your before and after results.

He was obviously a degenerate but let's get real

And I shouldn't even say degenerate. This guy took it to the

bank and entertained all of us minnows in the process

Not everyone is built for grandchildren on the porch

scenario. Don't bother with your Norman Rockwell

    view of the world

"its better to burn out than fade away" from another great

    Canadian

I hope this true, an unlikely happy ending to his disappearance. Glad he's alive.

    Called this

    Glad he's alive .

Guess you have to be a degenerate to know how we think.

Degens although fucked up in every aspect of normal life usually are way to proud to off themselves.

Especially when they been to the top of the mountain a time or two.

Hell we still think we are better then you right now.

Cuz to be honest we really are.
