Was she a notable player? Never heard her name before, and when you said Bike and Commerce, I assumed I was going to read about a Bay Area player. Not Oakland County metro Detroit. Was she an online pro? Hard to be a live pro poker player in Detroit. Games not big enough when I’m there. True of most Midwest cities. Games are like Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Rarely shit to make a living on.
I’ve seen her around the LA card clubs for what seems like at least 5+ years. I assumed she was from the LA area but apparently not. Sounds like she went back home due to COVID as many have done. Her charred remains were found in some sort of hiking area and it took a week to identify. Maybe a bad hookup hiking date off of tinder?
That makes sense, her being back home with casinos closed. Yeah I just leapt to Bay when I saw Oakland being Asian and figuring she might spend a lot of time down there chasing the fish. Was just surprised to see metro Detroit, but didn’t think about the death of live poker. Hopefully they catch whatever sick fuck did that.
Looks like she ran fairly deep in the WSOP Main in 2015, finishing 172nd. That was the year that Kelly Minkin burst on the scene (I think she was 29th), but Zhao had to be one of the last few women in the event.
Zhao also cashed in the Main in 2017.
Possible I played with her at some point at the WSOP, but I don't remember her.
Anyway... pretty fucked up.
Here's her Twitter:

She followed me, so now I feel kinda bad for not knowing who she was. Looks like she hasn't used it in 5 years, so it won't tell us much about her murder.
Here she is on Live at the Bike 3 years ago:
The story seems to be picking up a little more interest.
Made the front page of Yahoo newsfeed this morning. Can Dateline be too far behind?

Horrible story.
Cash game poker players have to be very wary of shady characters, especially during these times. Wonder if she let her guard down. Perhaps a friend betrayed her.

The attempt at concealing her remains almost exclusively means that the killer(s) is someone who knew her, and likely pretty well, or someone who was seen by others to have been with her around the time of she went missing. Because in contrast, a robber not known to have a relationship with her almost certainly would want to flee the vicinity of the body as soon as possible to avoid merely being seen with or near it. At least that is what I’ve heard the former FBI profiler who was a lead consultant and writer for the hit crime detective show Criminal Minds, Jim Clemente, has said in podcasts I’ve listened to on murder cases.

Podcast going through the story.
Starts at about minute 32.
There was a reference to this story being picked up on a lot of poker forums. Sadly no direct reference to PFA or any other specific site. But it sounds like these guys at least learned something about poker players likely economic situation. All the other major news sites seemed to have missed the obvious lack of money being earned at the tables.

A second murder charge was added for Morris.
They also found that he was watching violent porn videos the night before he met her, presumably giving evidence that he intended to act violently with her when they met up.
They found "two male DNA profiles" on the body, which has complicated things a bit. I don't think there was an accomplice. Between the DNA of two males and the motel knowing her well (despite her living with her mom just 2 miles away), I think we have a good idea of what was going on with her.
