Defender really was very underrated.
I think part of the problem is that it wasn't very appealing or eye-catching. When I first saw it, I had zero desire to play it and chose things like Pac-Man and Centipede instead.
Then my parents bought me Defender for Atari, so I had to try it out. The Atari version was actually fairly good, and it became my favorite game for awhile. Then I went to go play it in the arcade, and I enjoyed it as well.
Another seriously underrated early '80s game was Elevator Action.

When I first played Joust, I thought it was super hard and frustrating and refused to play it again.
Like Defender, I got it on Atari, got good at that version, and completely changed my mind. I also figured out how to kill the pterodactyl, so that also felt like a big accomplishment.
When two pterodactyls came on the screen though, it was a fucking mess.

My friends in corporate settings that are forced to use Teams tell me nothing but bad things about it.
Skype is horrible these days too. Microsoft really shit the bed here, they could have easily dominated this market.
