watch youtube ad-free, until they fix this.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/webdev/comm..._adding_a_dot/

pretty simple stuff. I put it in the CODE brackets so the vids wouldn't auto-embed.

    Code:
fyi: You can bypass youtube ads by adding a dot after the domain
    On desktop browsers.

To follow up: I had initially assumed that it didn't work on mobile because the browsers normalized the URL, however this isn't the case. The redirection happens on the server side. So, if you want this to work on mobile browsers, use the "Request Desktop Site" feature.

    For example,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DuB8VUICGqc // will occasionally show ads

https://www.youtube.com./watch?v=DuB8VUICGqc // will not show ads

It's a commonly forgotten edge case, websites forget to normalize the hostname, the content is still served, but there's no hostname match on the browser so no cookies and broken CORS - and lots of bigger sites use a different domain to serve ads/media with a whitelist that doesn't contain the extra dot

This works for many news websites as well serving paywalls, e.g.

    https://www.nytimes.com./2020/06/09/us/george-floyd-who-is.html

God forbid you support the content you watch.

    Still a cool find though.

I'm also convinced youtube mobile is looking for your face watching, and if it doesn't see a face it puts super long ads on lol

I'll put my phone to the side and listen to a video sometimes and I'll get blasted with 5 minute ads, ridiculous

I have no issues on youtube with adblock running on chrome. Shrug.

It doesn't work for me on NYT. The hyperlink removes the extra "." upon page load, after re-adding the dot it still blocks it off.

I don't either, but when I use chromecast and cast it to my tv, the adblock doesn't work on those ads anymore, but this does.

I honestly hadn't even tried the nytimes thing, i just copied the whole post from reddit.

I'd say i chromecast 95% of the time, and I may get an ad like, twice a day, this can't be normal?

i use uBlock origin and never have ads on youtube. However, on my TV I use a Roku and the Youtube app makes me watch ads. It only bothers me on longer videos where they put them arbitrarily into the video interrupting the flow. Recently I've been watching lots of Gourmet Makes starring the lovely Claire Saffitz, a jewess.

I have YouTube ads blocked on my iPhone through a jailbreak app called Cercube (which also allows me to download videos AND listen to content while in other apps, which is great).

On the PC I don't have anything, so thanks for this tip.

BTW you can use the [plain] tag here instead of [code]. I added that one a few years ago.

So, you start off criticizing the op with how everyone should just fuck off and support youtube advertising...

...then you proceed to list your own actual theories/examples of YouTube's shitty advertising, including unfortunate personal experiences - which of course is the exact reason why many people just like the op spread information like he did in the first place.

And don't give me the "BuT I wAs JuSt JoKiNg" thing either

You seem slightly upset. What seems to be your boggle?

FWIW though, I'm back with my wife, and I now have quadruplets.

that doesn't do me any good when I cast videos to my TV. this solution does. Also works on all browsers, even in all incognito modes, on all OSes.

Anyone that pays for streaming music service (Spotify, Apple Music) and watches a lot of youtube should ditch their streaming service and get Google Play Music.

Unless they changed something, you get the streaming music service with just as many songs as Spotify + adfree youtube.

It also gives you background youtube on your phone - te video plays but you can leave the window and do other stuff.

The educational nature of youtube is very high. I'd' say 99%+ of everything I watch is on youtube. Once you find the channels that suit your interests it's v hard to go back to every watching TV again, at least for me.

I don’t think any adblocker stops all the youtube ads but I could be wrong. I never found one that would stop all of the ads.

Anyway for the same price as apple music, i get google music + no ad youtube for 10 bucks a month.

If you are a nit and don't pay for streaming music, this obv doesn't apply
