California Tribal Casino Acquires Body Temperature Kiosks Ahead of June Reopening

A tribal casino in California is buying kiosks that allow guests and employees to have their body temperatures scanned without making contact with the machine. People who receive a temperature reading of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher will be denied entry.

    ---

This seems like a pretty good approach and quite frankly, exceeds my (low) expectations for casinos doing anything. I was at several AC casinos the day before all of AC was shut down and despite all the panic, the only precaution implemented at that time was one lonely cleaner that would wipe down the main door entrance. That's it. They were out of hand sanitizer in the poker room. They did switch to 9 handed tables but did not even bother spreading active tables around the big room, everyone was sitting in a tiny little section.

Of course, all the casinos send out their nice emails how they are doing everything they can but on actual casino floor, it was business as usual at the 3 casinos I visited. They shut down events/buffets/etc - things that cost money - and didn't have any safety measures in place. I will often check the same slot machines during the day and it was obvious that there was no additional cleaning - the garbage left behind hours ago would still be there hours later. If anything, as they started to cut back on labor, they had fewer cleaners. The CEO emails saying they are doing everything they can was a nice work of fiction...

Looking at the California Governor's 12-point plan which none has been achieved, it could be years before California re-opens.

The only reason people think that California will re-open in June is because that's when unemployment benefits run out.

    NEWSOM'S CHECKLIST FOR REOPENING CALIFORNIA

    1) How prepared is our state to test everyone who is symptomatic? Not Very Prepared at All

    2) Do we have the ability to identify people who have been in contact with those who have tested positive to reduce further transmission? Sort of in Theory

    3) Are older Californians and the medically vulnerable living in their own homes supported so they can continue to distance themselves? No

    4) Have we developed a plan to quickly identify and contain outbreaks in facilities housing older Californians, those living with disabilities, those currently incarcerated, and those with other health conditions? Not Really

    5) Do we have adequate bed capacity, staff and supplies such as ventilators and masks? You would hope so

    6) Can our healthcare system adequately address COVID-19 and other critical healthcare needs? No Way

    7) Have we built a coalition of private, public and academic partners to accelerate the development of therapeutics? Not Yet

    8) Have we identified potential therapeutics that have shown promise? Sort of but Not Really

    9) Have we worked with businesses to support physical distancing practices and introduced guidelines to provide health checks when employees or the general public enter the premises? A little bit but most businesses will probably ignore it

    10) Do we have supplies and equipment to keep the workforce and customers safe? No

    11) Are we tracking the right data to provide us an early warning system? Not Really but you will know something after it's too late

    12) Do we have the ability to quickly communicate the need to reinstate these measures? Hopefully

I don't trust tribal casinos to do anything responsibly. They are the epitome of self-serving (and are unregulated beyond what games they can offer).

The body temperature thing sounds nice, but it won't help much. It's believed that people are very contagious during the asymptomatic phase, and these people will skate right through.

Additionally, by the time most people have a fever, they lack the energy to go out to the casino. Some still have the energy, and some force themselves anyway, but the vast majority wouldn't be attempting to go anywhere, especially knowing they might be spreading the corona.
