You can take this a step further, most of those shootings were still justified. The idea that cops are going around killing unarmed black men for fun/sport because cops are racist is.........retarded. The odds of getting shot for no reason by a cop are around the same as dying from being struck by lightning.
blake, there won't be a collapse of the party.
Maybe a retooling.
If Biden wins, and if Democrats have all three houses, you can count on a lot of things happening which piss people off, resulting in a shellacking in the midterms.
That's pretty much exactly what happened in 1994.
While Clinton was a good enough politician to change course and save himself for 1996 (a bad Republican candidate in Dole helped, too), that 1994 win set the stage for Republicans to reshape the map and come back into prominence.
Once the noise of Trump is gone, and the Democrats have full control, there's no way they're going to pull off a lot of their extreme ideas without making a lot of centrists feel really uncomfortable.
You know when a tremendous backlash will come against Democrats? When they finally get socialized medicine into law (which will happen eventually), and people start to realize the reality of what is really is. Right now, many Americans have a rosy view of what to expect -- free healthcare for all! Never another medical bill! Everything treated and taken care of!
When they see the ugly reality of 6-month waits for specialists, denied tests, and 6-month waits for other tests, there will be panic. There will be even more panic when people come down with cancer symptoms and can't get into the doctor for 3 months. Republicans should win in a landslide in the following election. Sadly, we have to destroy our healthcare to get there, so I'm not looking forward to that, especially as my parents advance further in age, and even I start getting into further into the age where shit can go wrong.
Anyway, that's the future.
The present is that Trump will probably lose, Dems will get the Senate, and I will have to endure 2 years of watching a lot of really awful changes. But perhaps the party really does need kind of a reset in order to prevent losing states like Texas, so long term that may not be all that bad.
Republicans have no one to blame but themselves for electing someone so unhinge who actively made fun and taunted his own citizens on twitter. Seriously had any other republican won they would be cruising to reelection here. You put a lunatic in the whitehouse and then complain when he doesn’t get re-elected.
He’s the first guy on the Right to go on the offensive against the left and a lot of people don’t have the stomach for it. It’s maybe the biggest reason why he won the Presidency because there was an enormous appetite for someone on the Right to fight back.
The left has has had the GOP on its heels and playing defense for the past 30 years on social conservatism. People on the right had enough and that’s why Trump won.
The old GOP is dead in terms of being a political force. Free market and limited government arguments won’t win any more elections. The only way forward for the right to wield any kind of institutional power is MAGA. Trump is the only weapon the Right has in the culture war and he’s shown the way forward.
If MAGA dies the libs will grab power and never let go. The elites know this which is why they’re so desperate to defeat Trump.
i'm not sure about this.
trump's policy proposals are clearly popular with a lot of people.
if you had a "normal" candidate who pushed for a border wall and other social issues that a lot of mainstream republicans and democrats believe in, without the dumb statements, that candidate could win.
trump may have given republicans a blueprint for how to win elections.
push economic populism, bring back manufacturing jobs (or try, anyway), appeal to blue collar workers...
if that candidate just acted normal, he could win easily
i agree pretty much with the retooling thing. but i totally disagree at the idea that there will be "awful changes".
lol at thinking anything meaningful ever gets done in washington.
even as much as i hate trump, i'm not sure what big changes he actually made that had any effect on me whatsoever.
When you look at the trajectory of states and see early voting in Texas and Florida and Georgia, see the trends in the west, you come away unconvinced we will win those states this time, and I’m still nervous about the general, but I look and think the GOP better have a Hispanic candidate ready to roll going forward if they don’t want to lose by 200 every election come 2028 or so. It feels those places will be almost solidly blue by then.
If I was a republican, I don’t know if I care if I lose that much. 4 more years of Trump and you could see an AOC emerge policy wise. If Biden mucks around for 4 years, you may push back the inevitable by 10-15 years. That would be my solace as if I was a republican and I lose. We got 3 SC justices and this guy might have eventually turned Texas and Georgia and NC blue forever next election rather than in 10-15 years.
.
I agree and I would be all for a more polished version of Trump but the tenacity and fight needs to remain. MAGA policies are the key as you’re right, they are broadly popular.
The thing that worries me is that many influential people on the right want to return to the Mitt Romney types who will always cuck to the left when push comes to shove.
I mean, if anyone thinks a Haley/Crenshaw 2024 ticket is a good idea they just don’t get it. That ticket doesn’t have what it takes to win a general election and energize a base and they will always let the left control the narrative.
If Trump wins it’a a validation of MAGA and stops the Dems from transforming the country but if he loses the conservative movement could be essentially finished and the Republican Party will be opposition in name only.

The problem is the parties aren't stagnate even though we like to think they are.
Heck, just 3.5 years ago Democrats were pro tariffs and Republicans believed in free trade. Then Trump comes along and Democrats all of sudden become free traders.
Point being that the issues and the parties will continue to move around and continue to figure out ways to divide people.

thats the mentality. they have become addicted to this issue. the christian fundamentalists have effectively performed a hostile takeover of the entire conservative movement, hollowed it out, and converted it into a vehicle for fundamentalism. and the virus they used to deliver that payload is the 'pro life' movement.

So your argument against White privilege is 'there are poor uneducated white people also, I saw them myself'
Drawing a conclusion about a society of 350 million people based on what you see is like arguing that you should fold KK because an Ace always flops. You have to do the math and forget about the hands you 'remember'.
When do you think white privilege stopped being a thing, or do you think it was never a thing?
Because there's always been poor, uneducated white people in America, including during the times of slavery.
Why are you doing this? Repeating the same lies over and over. It's like since you disagree with what the protesters are protesting, and the democrats support the protesters, you don't think there's anything wrong with straight up lying.
Here, I'll give you another chance to ignore the truth:
Biden:
May 29:
they have a right to be, in fact, angry and frustrated. And more violence, hurting more people, isn’t going to answer the question.
May 31:
Protesting such brutality is right and necessary. It’s an utterly American response. But burning down communities and needless destruction is not. Violence that endangers lives is not. Violence that guts and shutters businesses that serve the community is not.
The act of protesting should never be allowed to overshadow the reason we protest. It should not drive people away from the just cause that protest is meant to advance.
June 2:
there is no place for violence, no place for looting or destroying property or burning churches, or destroying businesses,
James Clyburn, June 3:
We have to make sure we do not allow ourselves to play the other person’s game,” Clyburn said. “Peaceful protest is our game. Violence is their game. Purposeful protest is our game. This looting and rioting, that's their game. We cannot allow ourselves to play their game.
Breaking out a window will not contribute to that. Setting a fire, throwing stones at police officers, that’s destructive behavior, which will not contribute to anything that will make this a better country and make a better future for our children and our grandchildren
There's plenty more.
Over 95% of the 8,000+ summer protests were peaceful. People who disagree with what the protesters were protesting are spreading misinformation to make them all look like violent criminals. You're one of those people. What kind of "peaceful protest" needs to be defended? The kind we saw in Philly yesterday, where people were wheeling out TVs on dollys?
Point proven.
The above is how far gone Druff is. Seems like only yesterday he was able to think critically with the best of them.
