GFS model has pressure plummeting to 950 which means a potential Cat 4. The model is generally flaky on intensity, but we very well could see 125 MPH at landfall. The key is the storm is passing over western Cuba now which is generally flat, versus eastern Cuba which is high terrain.
This is going to be a multi billion dollar catastrophe either way. Yeah, this is going to be a problem.

This thing is really going to thump Louisiana. They get it terribly with likely 125 mph winds on the front end. But then the storm leaves the state and drains millions of metric waters in Arkansas which floods Louisiana on the back end. Going to be a rough run for the Cajuns for sure. You know if Obama had put up a Hurricane Wall we are not talking about this.

Definite Cat 3/4 at landfall. Like I said, LA is going to get hammered twice. First by winds and storm surge, then through catastrophic flooding from Arkansas on the back end. 141 kt winds between 925 and 950 mb inside the NE eye wall of Laura. It very well could be a Cat 5 at landfall. Either way, Lake Charles is going to get wiped out. Too bad, it is a nice city, I was there years nearly 15 years ago driving on I-10 to Florida. Stopped over at a Days Inn, only hotel that had availability.

Current projections are for it to remain a depression inland over the lower midwest and then re-form as a tropical storm once it heads back out over the mid-Atlantic, then brush by New England/Atlantic Canada. That's fucked up. Has that ever happened before?

The eye continues to warm and the eyewall continues to cool, both signs of further strengthening.
Been really hesitant to say this, but it's time: this could be a Category 5. It really is rare to have a strengthening Hurricane at Cat 5 levels hitting a really populated area. Last one I can think of was Andrew. Lake Charles is 100,000 people. Might not sound like a lot, but it is densely populated and there is nowhere to go. Shreveport is also going to get clobbered. You could see power outages for a month or longer. Beaumont is also going to get spanked. Then the rain comes back down from Arkansas. Going to be a disaster.
