Coachella to be cancelled or postponed?

just arrived to palm desert to find the tennis tourney we came to watch has been canceled.

gonna go dune buggy riding and shopping for the girls.

2020 BNP Paribas Open Will Not Be Held
    March 8, 2020

The Riverside County Public Health Department has declared a public health emergency for the Coachella Valley after a confirmed case of coronavirus (COVID-19) locally. As a result, the 2020 BNP Paribas Open will not take place at this time due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus and the safety of the participants and attendees at the event. This is following the guidance of medical professionals, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and State of California.

“There is too great a risk, at this time, to the public health of the Riverside County area in holding a large gathering of this size,” said Dr. David Agus, Professor of Medicine and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Southern California. “It is not in the public interest of fans, players and neighboring areas for this tournament to proceed. We all have to join together to protect the community from the coronavirus outbreak.”

“We appreciate the proactive stance tournament organizers are taking to ensure public health and safety,” said Martin Massiello, Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer, Eisenhower Health.

“We are very disappointed that the tournament will not take place, but the health and safety of the local community, fans, players, volunteers, sponsors, employees, vendors, and everyone involved with the event is of paramount importance,” said Tournament Director Tommy Haas. “We are prepared to hold the tournament on another date and will explore options.”

Any patron who has purchased tickets directly from the tournament may request a refund for the 2020 tournament, or a credit for the 2021 tournament. Patrons can visit www.bnpparibasopen.com/coronavirus to request a refund or credit.

Santa Clara County isn’t allowing gatherings of over 1000 people for next 3 weeks. San Jose Sharks will need to play to empty arena or move games.

Coachella postponed until 10/9 and 10/16.

Yup, no official release yet from Coachella but multiple journalism sites reporting talks are on to make a move to October a reality (and a message will be released soon)...

    Not Poor Ken.

He dragged his feet this year for the second year in a row regarding getting a hotel. In previous years, he booked Motel 6 a year in advance, and would re-book for the following year upon checking out. He also got a very good rate doing this.

Starting 2019, they stopped allowing this. Then he just dragged his feet and ended up staying in a shit motel for $360/night (week one), and slept on a park bench for week 2.

I told him to not let the same thing happen in 2020, and to book early. Again he didn't bother, and again everything sold out or was super expensive.

However, this gave him a second chance, because they moved Coachella from April to October, and it leaked out a day early, so only some people know about it, and some hotels there weren't aware yet.

So I worked with him tonight to book 8 nights (4 nights each week) for $511 TOTAL, after taxes. Tomorrow the same rooms will cost like $2500 for the same dates.

Master Scalir didn't run as well as we thought.

The hotel for weekend 2 at Coachella -- the one he got for $63/night -- force-cancelled him.

I called and got some guy with a thick accent that they aren't booking anything in October because the whole hotel is closed for renovations. I think it might be a trick that they force-cancel everyone who got it cheap, claiming "renovations", and then reopen all the rooms in a few days, claiming they're deciding to postpone them, and this time sell all the rooms at $300/night instead.

Can't even call Expedia to bitch because they are swamped with calls about everyone cancelling their trips pretty much everywhere.

We did make a backup reservation at Motel 6, which is far more expensive, so I guess there's that. At least it seems that his first cheap reservation is still alive... at least until they pull shenanigans again.

I was actually so pissed about what that motel did (it's owned by Asian Indians, surprise surprise) that I actually reached Expedia corporate (which is hard to do) and submitted a complaint.

I said they should be banned from reselling those dates later.

Obviously they didn't just wake up this morning and decide to "renovate" on the new Coachella weekends, 7 months from now. Like they'd choose to renovate during the most profitable two weekends of the year. Right.

They wanted to cancel all cheap reservations and resell it for $300/night later.

But that's what happens when you're dealing with piece of shit motels.

You really can’t blame them. Because Coachella was postponed, they lost the expected higher revenue for the time of the original schedule. And it’s not like they force-cancelled just prior to the festival, forcing Ken to pay an even higher price to not have to sleep on a park bench with all other rooms in the area long booked up.

LOL. So you tried to angle shoot them, and they angle shot you back. You would do the same thing, so who are you kidding. Coachella is probably a giant part of their profits for the year. It would be fiscally irresponsible for them to allow you to angle shoot them like that.

I am guessing you also get outraged when a sportbook lays a bad line which is an obvious error, and you take it, and get outraged if they cancel it.

Asian Indians? Never heard such a designation before.

    Is it a yankee thing?

    Late October?

Flu season will be over in a few weeks.

    Flu season returns in October.
Will the coronavirus return then too?

    Great timing.

This is nothing like a sportsbook laying a bad line.

Their price wasn't in error. They just hadn't raised it yet due to demand.

This is basic economics. You see a current price offering which you know is about to go up due to higher demand, and you buy it quickly. Nothing wrong with that, in the same way there's nothing wrong with the hotel raising prices if they see high demand coming.

It's all part of the game.

It becomes unethical when you invalidate previous sales because you want the product or service to go to someone now who is willing to pay more.

This would be just as unethical as someone who knowingly booked a nonrefundable reservation somewhere charging it back on their credit card because they found a cheaper hotel down the street.

To show you how much I really believe that, I warned Ken that he was taking a chance with these nonrefundable bookings, and that he'd be out the money if Coachella ended up moving to a different date than rumored. He said he understood and was wiling to gamble, which I agreed was smart.

BTW, this was done through Expedia, which expressly forbids in their contract this type of behavior. This is why the owner of the place lied about "renovations", in order to cancel Ken's reservation. Had they told the truth, Expedia would have permanently cancelled their ability to book there, as this would be considered an egregious terms violation.

I didn't angle-shoot at all. I did not purchase anything at an erroneously-listed price. It's not my fault that they didn't raise their prices fast enough.

BTW, do you think these scummy owners are going to refund people who paid for expensive, nonrefundable rooms for April now?

    I'll give you one guess.
