Just an awful story coming out of Philly this morning. As a parent, I seriously don't know how you carry on after something like this.
Eagles head coach Andy Reid’s son Garrett was found dead at 7:20 a.m. ET Sunday morning in his Lehigh University room at training camp, according to Eagles officials.
Reid was just 28 years old.
Police Chief of Lehigh County, Ed Schupp, told the media, "Attempts were made to revive Garrett when officers arrived, but they were unsuccessful," according to Comcast’s Reuben Frank.
While no cause was determined, the coroner said the investigation was ongoing, but no suspicious activity was believed to have taken place.
Andy Reid was not at practice this morning, but he instructed the team to continue training camp despite his absence. Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman was forced to break the news to the media and broke down crying in the process.
Garrett had a long history of trouble throughout his life, having served prison time for failing a drug test after spending time in a rehab facility. Reid’s first brush with trouble was in 2007 when he was found to be in possession of heroin and syringes after hitting another vehicle while driving.
Reid was also caught smuggling pills into prison before finally being released after seven months. Since his latest incidents with the law, the Reid family has been honest about Garrett’s struggles and come out to cheer him for his triumphs.
The cause of death is uncertain, but the sadness shared by everyone in this situation is for sure. Everyone in the Eagles organization or anyone who is a parent can sympathize with the sadness of losing a child, no matter how much trouble they may have gotten themselves into.
